Entrepreneurial Faculty Achievement Awards

Entrepreneurial achievement is a very important part of university activity. It contributes to the vitality, prestige and economic growth of the university and has been shown to have a significant impact on economic growth in regions across the country. Recognizing the importance of entrepreneurial activity to the University of Cincinnati, as well as our region and state, two awards have been created for exceptional faculty achievement in promoting and maximizing the commercial potential and human benefits of university intellectual property and/or research. Both awards are open to faculty in all colleges of the University.

Awards:
The two categories in which awards will be given are:

1. Established Entrepreneur Award
For faculty with a record of five or more years of successful entrepreneurial technology ventures, based upon University research and/or intellectual property. (Both current and previous UC faculty are eligible, as long as entrepreneurial success is connected to the research and/or intellectual property of the University of Cincinnati or its affiliates.)

2. Emerging Entrepreneur Award
For faculty who have successfully launched a new technology venture during the past 5 years, based on University research and/or intellectual property.


Selection Criteria:
Criteria for selection will include the following:

Established Entrepreneur Award

  • Documented history of establishing multiple technology business ventures or one or more path-breaking technology ventures that have achieved major financial success in national or international markets
  • Ventures based upon intellectual property and/or research that have a substantial university connection at the time of development
  • Level of contribution as measured by sustained royalty/licensing revenue
  • Five or more year record of successful commercialization of the products of research
  • Demonstrated marketplace impact


Emerging Entrepreneur Award

  • Successful launch of a new commercial technology venture or license within the last five years
  • Venture based upon intellectual property/research with a substantial UC connection at the time of development
  • Documented potential for market impact
  • Demonstrated marketplace advancement as measured by developmental milestones
  • Level of contribution measured through potential revenue to the university as determined by the professional market analysis

Application Requirements and Submission:


All applications must be submitted electronically on the form provided. Forms can be accessed at http://webcentral.uc.edu/eaward/apply.cfm.

Selection Process:
The Entrepreneurial Affairs Advisory Committee will serve as the Selection Committee. The Advisory Committee is comprised of 15 faculty representatives from 9 colleges, along with representatives from 3 administrative units and 5 external groups.

Information provided in the application should include non-confidential information regarding how the intellectual property licensing/assignment by UC and/or its affiliates led to enhanced product development or service. Verification of information will be requested if nominee is selected as a finalist for the award.

Nomination Deadline:
Nominations are being solicited for these awards at this time. Nominations deadline is February 19, 2007. Self-nominations as well as nominations by colleagues are welcome.

Notification of Awards:
Awardees will be notified of selection by March 1, 2007.

Presentation of Awards:
The awards will be presented on May 1, 2007 at the University Faculty Awards Ceremony. All awardees are invited to further celebrate their achievement as honorees at the Entrepreneurship Education and Research Banquet in mid May.
