Online English Placement Essay
General Information

Students have the option of completing their English placement essay online. This option allows students to read the article and to complete the summary, essay, and reflection at home or from any place in the world with access to the Web.

What Are the Advantages of the Online English Placement?

  • Students have time to read the article, make notes, brainstorm, draft, revise, and edit the essay just as they will do in our composition courses.
  • Students will have several days to compose the essay.
  • This option eliminates the stress of a timed situation and allows students to be free from test anxiety at orientation.
  • Students produce essays that are a more accurate reflection of their writing ability.
  • Students can check results online.

PLEASE NOTE: Online essays are read and scored by UC faculty who teach composition as are the on-campus essays.

What Is the Procedure?

  • Students who are admitted and confirmed at UC can logon to the online English assessment site and register for the online essay. The online essay will be offered several times this spring and summer. For more information, go to schedule.
  • Students have several days from the time the writing assignment becomes available (NOT several days from when students logon) to complete the assignment.
  • Students should complete the assignment offline using a word processor.
  • After completing the assignment, any time within the scheduled period, students re-logon and upload (copy and paste) the summary, essay, and reflection into the submission window.
  • Students receive immediate confirmation that their writing has been received.
  • Students will receive an e-mail notifying them when results are available.
  • An email and phone helpline will be available during the online assessment period.

Online English Assessment Policies

  1. Students may write a placement essay only once. That is, students who write the online essay cannot thereafter write an on-campus essay nor vice versa.
  2. Students who are scheduled for Clifton Campus orientations in July should register for the one of the online essays offered in April, May, or early June. If they do not, they must write the on-campus essay at Quick Start. Students at Clifton campus must complete the English Placement Essay prior to Summer Orientation.
  3. Students at branch campuses who do not complete the online assessment will be required to write the timed essay on campus. See information listed under your college.
  4. Once you access the readings for the essay, you should not discuss the subject matter with anyone. Furthermore, you may not receive any assistance from anyone in planning, writing, revising, or editing any part of the writing. When you submit the essay, you will be required to write out the following statement:

I hereby affirm that I did not discuss the reading or question for this essay with anyone. Furthermore, I affirm that no person helped me in planning, writing, revising, or editing this essay. I also affirm that, if I consulted any outside materials after looking at the reading or essay topic, I have cited the source of each external item of information or opinion.

You are submitting the essay as a University of Cincinnati student. Any evidence of plagiarism, including assistance with writing the essay, will have serious repercussions. Outside help defeats the purpose of placement assessment. An incorrect placement costs students time and money and interferes with their academic success.
