UC|21 Executive Leadership Series

Join policy makers, elected officials, community leaders, higher education leadership and faculty and others to explore the potential of deliberative democracy to enhance public discourse, policy making, regional cooperation and civic engagement.

This day-long event includes a general session in the morning with all featured speakers and special sessions throughout the afternoon hosted by UC’s College of Business, College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning, College of Law, McMicken College of Arts and Sciences, and the Charles Phelps Taft Research Center.

General Session

The symposium general session, scheduled from 9:30 – 11:45 a.m., Great Hall, Tangeman University Center, includes the following speakers presenting their perspectives on deliberative democracy:

  • James S. Fishkin, Professor of Communication and Director of Center for Deliberative Democracy, Stanford University
  • Michael K. Lewis, Esq., Neutral, JAMS, The Resolution Experts, Washington, D.C.
  • Carrie Menkel-Meadow, Professor of Law and Chair in Dispute Resolution and Civil Procedure, Georgetown University
  • Lawrence E. Susskind, Professor of Urban and Environmental Planning, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Special Sessions

  • 2 – 3:30 p.m.: James Fishkin at the Taft Research Center, roundtable discussion on methods of deliberative democracy with political science faculty in the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences.
  • 2 – 4:50 p.m.: Larry Susskind at DAAP
    • 2 – 3 p.m.: informal discussion with faculty and doctoral students in 6218 DAAP.
    • 3:30 - 4:50: Lecture, "Looking at the Differences between Public Participation and Collaborative Decision-Making: Examples and Lessons" followed by discussion in 3420 DAAP.
  • 3 – 4:30 p.m.: Michael Lewis at the College of Business, informal discussion with students, 110 Lindner Hall.
  • 4 – 5:30 p.m.: Carrie Menkel-Meadow at College of Law, Lecture, "The Lawyer's Role(s) in Deliberative Democracy," followed by a responsive discussion with a panel of distinguished Cincinnati attorneys and law professors, in 118 College of Law. Application has been made for 1.5 CLE hours; approval is anticipated. No charge.
