Stadium View Offers Looks and Lunch

The Stadium View Café, one of two restaurants celebrating their grand opening Jan. 30 in UC’s state-of-the art Campus Recreation Center Complex, is strictly a lunch venue, and oh, what a view it will offer. It’s a facet of MainStreet that links UC’s rich history with an active Master Plan that’s transforming UC into an internationally recognized urban campus with premiere academic facilities, signature architects, flowing green space and pedestrian pathways.

The 180-seat restaurant in UC’s newest building, which completes construction of the MainStreet passageway through the heart of campus, overlooks historic Nippert Stadium, which got under construction beginning in 1916. Kevin Grace, university historian, says the stadium was one of the earliest college venues to have lights on the field – and the reason is linked to another facet of UC’s rich history. “Nighttime was the only time that co-op students were able to practice, so that’s why the lights were erected,” says Grace. UC is the founder of cooperative education, which is marking its 100th anniversary this year.

Stadium View Café, the restaurant that holds a visual link to UC’s tradition and transformation, offers soups, salads, Sunset Strips (chicken), subs and sandwiches and sweets with prices averaging around $4. “As a component of the MainStreet corridor blending campus life and learning, the Stadium View Café, with its views of Nippert Stadium and Varsity Village, provides another key location for students to gather between classes,” says John Hautz, UC director of auxiliary services.
