Selected Projects from UC s Tech Expo 2008

The local, regional and national firms that seek out, sponsor or make use of the applied-research projects created by University of Cincinnati students for their annual Tech Expo make for a diverse roster: AK Steel, Cincinnati Bell Telephone, Cincinnati Thermal Spray, Duke Energy, F&M Mafco, The Kroger Company, LexisNexis, Meritor Webco, SolidWorks, Sun Chemical and many more.

All of the above-named firms have come to UC to participate in Tech Expo set to run from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Thursday, May 22, in the Duke Energy Center, downtown. Others seeking to benefit from specific projects include the following companies sponsoring the following projects.

  • An at-home paper recycling machine sponsored by International Paper of Tennessee.

  • An automated spindle washer to clean 38,000-pound steel mill couplings, sponsored by Xtek Incorporated of Sharonville, Ohio.

  • A device that pulls multiple bullets at a time and sorts the components, sponsored by BAE Systems of Fairfield, Ohio.

  • An easy caulk gun sponsored by Albion Engineering Co. of New Jersey.

  • A chemical test to determine the best food flavors possible for products, sponsored by Cargill Flavor System of Cincinnati.

  • A new design for a machine insert to cut large swaths of a material into desired smaller strips (like band-aids), sponsored by Northpointe Custom Machine and Tooling Solutions of Hebron, Ky.

  • A rear-view camera system sponsored by Nortrax (Cincinnati) and Bray Arnsperger Excavating, Inc., of Alexandria, Ky.

  • A rotary-table and drilling station that will automatically assemble hex picnic table seats designed for The Plastic Lumber Company of Akron, Ohio.

  • A study of bio-enzymatic floor cleaners sponsored by Procter & Gamble Company.

  • A special table for viewing construction documents has been designed for HTC Products, Inc., of Michigan. A patent will be sought on the device, which is transportable, accessible and durable.

  • A three-wheeled vehicle sponsored by a consortium of local and national firms including Bud Herbert Motors Inc. (with locations in Cincinnati and Harrison)  and Tuff Torq Corporation of Tennessee.

  • A torque-limiting belt tensioner, for which a patent will be sought, designed to prevent excess tension on a belt-driven precision spindle, sponsored by SETCO Sales Co. of Cincinnati.

 
Other Tech Expo projects include

  • A device that detects when drivers might be falling asleep and sounds an alert.

  • A “Simon Says” alarm clock that requires the user to play a game of “Simon Says” to disable the alarm.

GE Aerospace Foundation is investing further in its Next Engineers program, including the Cincinnati location facilitated by the University of Cincinnati, extending the program locally through 2028. While his initial fascination centered on large trucks, his childhood interest sent him down a path of professional and personal discovery. Today, Cortas is a fourth-year student concurrently pursuing bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering through the ACCEND accelerated degree program at the University of Cincinnati College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS).
