Its been said that theres no better place to have a stroke than Cincinnati. The credit for that reputation belongs to UCs Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Stroke Team. This acclaimed assemblage of professionals produces miracles on demand working to give back stroke victims ability to walk, talk and live normal lives.
National news media praise the stroke team model, which summons neurological specialists immediately upon receiving word that someone in the region has suffered a stroke. The team is engaged in academic and clinical trials, offering patients and their families the opportunity to participate in cutting-edge research. This squadron of specialists also works to break down the biggest barrier to effective acute stroke treatment: lack of knowledge that a stroke is occurring or has occurred.
Ongoing Stroke Team research includes a $15-million, five-year study of genes that cause aneurysms to develop and rupture, laboratory studies of the hemorrhage in the brain, three additional genetic studies of stroke as well as two large clinical trials of acute stroke therapy.
These pursuits enabled UCs Department of Neurology to crack the top 10 among 72 neurology departments nationwide in federal research funding during Fiscal Year 2002. So significant is the quality service of this unit in Greater Cincinnati, the Quality Service Initiative established a special award to recognize the team at this years Celebrate UC.
