THURSDAY: Are the Maya Really Afro-Maya?
Matthew Restall, professor of Latin American history, anthropology and womens studies at Pennsylvania State University, will be speaking at the Charles Phelps Taft Research Center about his book, The Black Middle.
The book, the first full-length study of black African slaves and other people of African descent in the Spanish colonial province of Yucatan, explores topics such as slavery and freedom, militia service and family life, bigamy and witchcraft, and the ways in which Afro-Yucatecans interacted with Mayas and Spaniards.
