Garland Speaks Jan. 24 on Public Universities
James C. Garland, retired president of Miami University, will speak at the University of Cincinnati at 4:00 p.m. Monday, Jan. 24, in Room 450 Lindner Center, Varsity Village. Garlands topic is Saving Alma Mater: A Rescue Plan for Americas Public Universities, which is also the subject of his recent book by the same title.
The presentation, free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Fellows of the UC Graduate School. A reception for Dr. Garland will follow the speech.
Garlands book was described by the New York Times as a useful primer on academic dysfunction, and recommended for readers who want a more analytical examination of contemporary challenges facing universities by Library Journal.
Given the financial difficulties of the State and the University, the subject matter is most timely, said Peter J. Stambrook of UCs Graduate Fellows.
James C. Garland began his teaching career at The Ohio State University in 1970. During his twenty-six-year tenure there, he served as a physics professor and department chairperson, acting vice president for research and graduate studies, director of the schools Materials Research Laboratory, dean of its College of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, and finally the schools executive dean of Arts and Sciences. In 1996 Garland began a ten-year term as president of Miami University of Ohio. He retired in 2006.
The Fellows of The Graduate School are appointed for life by the Board of Trustees from among the faculties of the University of Cincinnati, based on outstanding scholarly or artistic attainment. The Fellows are concerned with all matters relating to graduate education and research, including planning and development.
