UC ingot   The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) is proud to announce several new collaborations supported by a grant from ArtsWave. Awarded in June 2012, CCM’s $50,000 ArtsWave Community Partnership grant was designed to develop mutually beneficial projects that will advance both organizations’ goals for the community and the arts sector.

ArtsWave’s generous support will help CCM enhance its current collaborative relationship with the School for Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA) and will also allow CCM to formalize new partnerships with several community outreach programs, almost all of which were initiated by CCM faculty, students or alumni.

These partnerships are designed to provide under-served geographies and populations in Cincinnati with direct access to CCM faculty and alumni, along with students, staff and administrators. The initial community partners include:

• SCPA – ArtsWave funding will allow CCM to expand its collaborative relationship with SCPA, creating new opportunities for SCPA students to:
  • receive assistance from faculty members of both CCM and the CCM Preparatory Department (CCM Prep), who will help guide students through college application requirements, prepare for auditions and more.
  • audition before a “mock” panel of CCM faculty and administrators to help students prepare for college entrance.
  • collaborate with CCM on joint performances.
• The Cincinnati Out Reach (COR) Music Project – ArtsWave funding will help CCM support the COR Music Project’s teaching artists.

• Music for Youth in Cincinnati (MYCincinnati) – ArtsWave funding will help CCM support MYCincinnati’s string quartet, the Price Hill String Quartet, which is comprised of two MYCincinnati directors and two current CCM students.

• Queen City Chamber Opera – ArtsWave funding will help CCM support future performances of the opera company, beginning with the Jan. 26–27, 2013, double bill of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Zaide and Carl Maria von Weber’s Abu Hassan.

• Whiz Kids – ArtsWave funding will help CCM Prep bring its collaboration with Whiz Kids to three area schools: Chase Elementary School in Northside, Rees E. Price Academy in East Price Hill and John P. Parker School in Madisonville. Grant dollars will fund workshops, curriculum and CCM students to facilitate the program.

About the Cincinnati Out Reach Music Project
The Cincinnati Out Reach (COR) Music Project is an after-school program for high school students co-founded and directed by CCM graduate students Deron Hall and Louisa Shepherd. Inspired by “El Sistema,” Venezuela’s National Network of Youth and Children Orchestras, COR embraces the idea of changing young people’s lives through the discipline of music education and training.

By relying on donations and grants for instruments and other training materials, the program provides under-served students with the opportunity to take music lessons without the expenses normally involved. CCM students act as the COR Music Project’s master teachers, providing lessons in vocal and instrumental performance. About Music for Youth in Cincinnati
Music for Youth in Cincinnati (MYCincinnati) is a free youth orchestra program in Price Hill. Founded on the idea that personal transformation can be achieved by striving towards musical excellence, MYCincinnati offers children in Price Hill the opportunity to learn violin, viola or cello and play in an orchestra.

MYCincinnati is also inspired by “El Sistema,” Venezuela’s revolutionary youth orchestra program that uses music as a vehicle for social change. Students enrolled in MYCincinnati meet for 10 hours a week in Price Hill. The program consist of group and private lessons, sectionals, orchestra, musicianship and frequent performance. About Whiz Kids
Similar in nature to CCM’s COR Music Project collaboration, CCM’s Preparatory Department (CCM Prep) has begun collaborating with Whiz Kids, a literacy-based, after-school tutoring and mentoring program that connects adults in the community with at-risk elementary students in the Cincinnati Public School District. CCM Prep employs current CCM students who team with this nonprofit organization by leading a music class for elementary students involved in Whiz Kids, taking place after that program’s initial designated hour of tutoring has concluded.

The goal of this music class is to equip elementary students with a general knowledge and appreciation of music, while simultaneously creating organized teaching opportunities for CCM students. Through this collaboration, elementary students will form relationships with their teachers, creating encouragement and support for these otherwise at-risk students to stay in school and to live healthy, successful lives in the community. It will also broaden the perspective and worldview of CCM’s students, encouraging later involvement in their communities.
