UC Public Safety Announces New Police Chief, Assistant Chief
Following a national search, the University of Cincinnati has selected Anthony Carter to serve as chief of police and Maris Herold as assistant chief of police.
Anthony Carter, who will begin on June 20, has 34 years of policing experience, most recently with the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. Herold, who also begins June 20, joins UC from the Cincinnati Police Department where she has served for nearly 25 years. Both Carter and Herold played key roles in the reform of the Cincinnati Police Department during the last 15 years.
An 11-member search committee reviewed nearly 70 applications, conducted 10 video conference interviews and narrowed down the candidate pool to 5 finalists. A series of on-campus open forums were held, one for each candidate, to provide members of the UC and Cincinnati communities an opportunity to meet the candidates and ask questions. Feedback from the community was also solicited throughout the search and interview process.
We searched for high-qualified candidates that demonstrate a commitment to evidence-based and community policing who understand the needs of a complex, diverse urban campus, said S. Gregory Baker, who led the search committee and serves as UCs director of police community relations.
Anthony Carter and Maris Herold are uniquely qualified to lead our police department as we begin work to transition the UC Police Department into a national model for urban campus policing, said Robin S. Engel, vice president for safety and reform. They will play a crucial role in the development and oversight of a strategy to rebuild trust between UC Police and members of the university and Cincinnati communities.
