New Blackboard Tool Links Syllabi to Learning Opportunities

by Chris Collins

The UCit Blackboard Support Team is pleased to announce the general release of a new tool in Blackboard that allows instructors to publish online syllabi to the Learning Opportunities course listings. Created in collaboration with the Registrar's Office, this tool lets students review class requirements and other pertinent information before registering for courses. When students browse the Learning Opportunities catalogue online, they will see a small "S" next to the title of each course that has a live syllabus link. By clicking on the "S," the student can view all published syllabi associated with that particular course.

The Publish Syllabus tool appears in the Control Panel of every course on Blackboard, though the tool will not work with meta courses or other unofficial course sites. To use the tool, an instructor simply uploads the syllabus to the Syllabus area in his or her Blackboard course site and clicks through a short menu of options. Within an hour, the "S" will appear next to that course in Learning Opportunities, and students can view the document as they browse for their next quarter's courses.

Instructors who want to use the tool for Winter Quarter will want to review the Blackboard Best Practices Guide:  Publishing a Syllabus to Learning Opportunities, located on the Blackboard Support site. The document contains step-by-step instructions for publishing a syllabus to Learning Opportunities, as well as tips for editing or "un-publishing" a syllabus that has already been posted.

If you have questions or comments about this tool, please contact the Blackboard Support Team, at (513) 556-1602, or via email to Blackboard@UC.Edu.
