Van Gogh Self Portrait, (dedicated to Paul Gauguin)

Saturday, May 13, 12:00 - 4:00PM / $89 / One Class

Instructor: Kevin McCarthy

Location: Victory Parkway Campus

This self-portrait was painted for Paul Gauguin as part of a swap between the artists. Van Gogh called himself an “arbitrary colourist”. Writing to his brother about his portraits, he explains: “I use colour more arbitrarily in order to express myself forcefully .” Van Gogh said of this self-portrait, “The head is modeled in light colors painted in a thick impasto against the light background with hardly any shadows. Only I have made the eyes slightly slanting like the Japanese.” This class will study how Van Gogh reduces the complexity of reality with the incandescent luminosity of the human face. In this class, paint your own rendition of Van Gogh’s Self Portrait. Learn the basics of mixing color, composition and the differentiation of shapes, and produce your own creative response to a Van Gogh’s painting on a canvas. Utilizing the overall spontaneous approach of the artist, we will create a personalized, simplified image of a Van Gogh painting. You will receive one gallery-wrapped, stretched 11 x 14” fine art canvas, a set of brushes, and a full set of acrylic paints in a wide spectrum of colors, at no extra cost. Take home your own original piece of art ready for framing.
