The E&I Conference will consist of four concurrent sessions, the Dr. Marian Spencer Equity Ambassador Luncheon, and presentation of the 2019 E&I Grant recipients. In observance of the University of Cincinnati’s Bicentennial Celebration, the theme for this year's Equity & Inclusion Conference is Owning the Journey. In keeping with President Pinto's vision, this year's conference will focus on the history of the institution while "elevat[ing] its dynamic present and look[ing] forward with great anticipation to its innovative impact over the next 200 years.” In living Boldly Bearcat, the 2019 Equity & Inclusion Conference centers on honoring the past, elevating the present and bending the future.

Keynote Speaker

This years keynote speaker for the Equity & Inclusion Conference is Shaun R. Harper, PhD. He is a Provost Professor in the Rossier School of Education and Marshall School of Business at USC, the Clifford and Betty Allen Chair in Urban Leadership, and executive director of the USC Race and Equity Center. Prior to joining USC, he spent a decade on the University of Pennsylvania faculty, where he founded the Center for the Study of Race & Equity in Education.

He is author of over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles and other academic publications and received more than $12 million in research grants. Review of Research in Education, Teachers College Record, Harvard Educational Review, Journal of Higher Education, Review of Higher Education, and Journal of College Student Development are some journals that have published his research. Professor Harper’s research has been cited in more than 8,000 published studies. His books include Advancing Black Male Student Success from Preschool through Ph.D. and Johns Hopkins University Press is publishing his 13th book, Race Matters in College.

Professor Harper is past president of the Association for the Study of Higher Education [ASHE] and an elected member of the American Educational Research Association [AERA] Executive Council. He serves on editorial boards for the Journal of Higher Education and American Educational Research Journal, and was previously associate editor of Educational Researcher. Professor Harper was named an AERA Fellow in 2017. AERA also presented him its 2010 Early Career Award [Division G] and 2014 Relating Research to Practice Award. Additionally, he received the 2008 ASHE Early Career Award, the 2012 National Association of Student Personnel Administrators Robert H. Shaffer Award for Faculty Excellence, and the 2014 American College Personnel Association Contribution to Knowledge Award. Governors State University awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2017.

Professor Harper has been interviewed on CNN, ESPN, and NPR, and featured or quoted in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Sports Illustrated, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Ed, and over 11,000 news outlets in the U.S. and abroad. He was appointed to President Barack Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper advisory council in 2015, and recognized in Education Week as one of the 10 most influential professors in the field of education in 2017.
