Hero Bearcat Name: The Hero Within

Hero Bearcat Location: Tangeman University Center — University of Cincinnati Campus

Artist profile: Tara Hush and her team at Marks Design have more than 20 years of design experience creating everything from packaging to art installations. They were instrumental in the creation of “Pigtone,” one of the flying pig statues displayed around the city. They chose “The Hero Within” for their Bearcat to honor the everyday hero on the street who, through a small and kind deed or a simple act, makes the difference for those in need. They used reflective mirror panels with vinyl letters to create their shining hero star. Marks Design team includes: Tara Hush, Brandon Wells, Ben Ludtke, Maddy Hall, Lindsay Moore, Hai Phan, Molly Hennessey, Heather Davis, Lauren Deaton, Carly Emmerich and Kris Linkugel.

Hero Bearcat Name: One Giant Pounce for Bearcats Nation

Hero Bearcat Location: Kenwood Towne Center — Cincinnati, OH

Artist profile: Lori Kay Farr has a rich 17-year history of working as a mosaic artist, having created a painted standing pig and a seated mosaic pig using stained glass for past Cincinnati “Big Pig Gig” entries. Both experiences gave her the opportunity to work with different mediums on a fiberglass base. Recently she was lead artist on an outdoor mosaic mural project permanently installed on Warsaw Avenue in Price Hill. As an art instructor, Farr created a large mosaic for the Fitton Center, a four-story tall building mural in Hamilton, Ohio, and several mosaics juried into exhibitions around the region. Farr’s fine arts degree in environmental design has opened the door for many opportunities to design and create engaging public art, room environments and dramatic set designs.

Hero Bearcat Name: Super Dad to the Rescue

Hero Bearcat Location: Macy's, Kenwood Towne Center — Cincinnati, OH

Artist profile: In addition to teaching art for Kings High School grades 9-12, Carrie Lynn Cooke has extensive experience in public sculpture design, including the Cincinnati “Big Pig Gig” in 2000. She was also commissioned to create two public sculptures for the University of Kentucky’s Basketball Museum for their “Wildcat Madness” in 2001, three flower pot sculptures for Hyde Park Square’s “Flower Power” in 2002 and a public sculpture for the Indianapolis 500 festival “Art in Motion” in 2003. Cooke’s experience were an asset as she created her Bearcat in honor of all the superdads who take seriously the privilege of being a hands-on pop.

Hero Bearcat Name: Graduation Bearcat

Hero Bearcat Location: McMicken Preview Pavilion - University of Cincinnati Campus

Artist profile: Brieanne Hauger has been working in sculpture design and production management for over a dozen years, primarily for Cowpainters LLC. She has also freelanced as an illustrator for over twenty years. Hauger maintains a personal art practice, using painting and sculpture as mediums to explore ideas around landscape, color, and transcendence. She was one of the founders of ACRE, an artist collective that runs a yearly residency program in Steuben, WI. When not working, she enjoys being a mother to her daughter Anya.

Hero Bearcat Name: Pharmacist Bearcat

Hero Bearcat Location: Corryville Public Library - Vine Street, Cincinnati, OH

Artist profile: Jonathan Martin is a 2011 UC DAAP grad from the industrial design program. Jon began his career designing eyewear for Under Armour and Hobie and freelancing in toy, footwear and entertainment design before changing positions to Procter & Gamble in Cincinnati where he is now an innovation designer for the beauty, skin and personal care businesses. Jon grew up on the westside of Cincinnati and has a large family here. Jon’s family consists of pharmacists, nurses, teachers, police officers, fireman, chefs, designers, artists, architects and many more respectable professions that he admires and wanted to tribute these paintings to.

Hero Bearcat Name: Clean and Green Bearcat

Hero Bearcat Location: Marian Spencer Hall Plaza - Univeristy of Cincinnati Campus

Artist profile: Karen O’Donnell has a variety of experience working with statues — mostly small figures such as bobbleheads and promotional products for clients at Associated Premium Corporation — where she has worked since 1999. Included in her oeuvre of artistic mediums, O’Donnell has worked with fiberglass paint for creating logos on sailboats. For her Bearcat, she used indoor/outdoor vinyl decals for the logo and fiberglass paint to cover the entire figure. In her spare time she is a UC Health Therapy Dog volunteer.

Hero Bearcat Name: Standard Bearcat

Hero Bearcat Location: Victory Plaza, Old Oscar Slab — University of Cincinnati Campus

Artist profile: With a degree in graphic design — a discipline she has practiced for nearly 20 years — Margaret Weiner, art director for Creative services in Marketing + Communications at the University of Cincinnati, will venture into a new experience while designing her fiberglass statue. In addition to her graphic design career, Weiner explores traditional and non-traditional media including, 2-D and 3-D projects, exhibiting cast concrete forms at a few local galleries, and she has toured locally for a few years as a musician. Currently, she spends her spare time at the potter’s wheel and dabbling in digital and traditional illustrations using pen, pencil and ink.

Hero Bearcat Name: Bearcat Aviator

Hero Bearcat Location: National Underground Railroad Freedom Center - Cincinnati, OH

Artist profile: As a senior at Moeller High School, John Pappalardo has no formal experience in fiberglass design but has a strong artistic background as a student in Moeller’s AP Studio Art program. Pappalardo has been drawing since childhood and plans to pursue a career in industrial design at UC’s College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning after graduation. Pappalardo chose “Aviator” as the name of his Bearcat Hero, which includes a leather cap and uniform, inspired by WWII era pilots.

Hero Bearcat Name: Fire Fighter Bearcat

Hero Bearcat Location: Cincinnati Firefighter Museum - Downtown Cincinnati

Artist profile: As a Freshman at Harrison High school, Eric Cooper is involved in football and wrestling; he has also enjoyed his 1st year of art classes at Harrison. Eric will continue crafting his skills in Art II next year. Eric chose a firefighter as his Bearcat because he is interested in pursuing a career as a firefighter.

Hero Bearcat Name: Keeping the Conservation Promise

Hero Bearcat Location: Mad Cap Education Center - Harrison Ave., Cincinnati, OH

Artist profile: Three current and one former Aiken High School students, with art teacher Patty New, painted a pop art collage that includes many scenes and scenarios depicting the interactions between the animals and their compassionate and knowledgeable zookeepers. The high school students and the UC sophomore demonstrate how to make art that is both meaningful and exciting. Additional public displays of the students’ talents include the Artist Reaching Classrooms Exhibitions through the Taft Museum, SOS Exhibitions through the Art Academy about peace and justice, CPS City Wide Art Shows, and Scholastic Arts and Writing competitions. Their extensive time, talent and commitment reflects the significance of honoring the animals and underscores the importance of conservation.

Artist profile: As a Cincinnati based artist and an art educator for Harrison High School, Alicia Cummings has her work featured at Hoffman & Albers Interiors, David A. Millett and William Effler Jewelers in Cincinnati. She also has work represented at the Framery Gallery in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, and Hayley Gallery in Columbus, Ohio. Cummings plans to customize her Bearcat designs in conjunction with her high school art club students.

Hero Bearcat Name: First Bearcat on the Moon

Hero Bearcat Location: Florence Mall - Florence, KY

Artist profile: As a sophomore at Villa Madonna Academy, Trinity Tankersley has excelled in art, focusing on painting, pencil sketches, clay and wire sculpture. While she has never worked with fiberglass statues, she enjoyed using her painting skills to turn her Bearcat into a replica of Neil Armstrong when he placed the American flag on the moon. As a space enthusiast, Tankersley was inspired by Neil Armstrong, a national hero and astronaut, who went on to teach at UC’s College of Engineering.

Hero Bearcat Location: Florence Mall - Florence, KY

Artist profile: Hollie McGovney has been passionate about art since childhood and is now completing high school classes in drawing, painting, sculpture and art fundamentals. While McGovney has no experience working with fiberglass statues, she has a background in clay, plaster, tools, paints and more. Currently McGovney is a member of the National Art Honor Society at Grant County High School.

Hero Bearcat Location: Liberty Center - Liberty Township, OH

Artist profile: JoAnn Heurich has enjoyed a lifelong love of art including oil, acrylic and watercolor paints, plus creating jewelry. In addition to teaching art classes, Heurich now participates in several charitable artistic competitions such as the “Big Pig Gig” for the Sugar Creek Packing Co. and she paints the Reds’ bats for the Starlight Foundation of Children’s Hospital. She especially takes pride in the vases designed for Tiffany’s and Hidden Valley Lake, Indiana, auctions. For her Hero Bearcat statue Heurich will use outdoor latex and acrylic patio paints by Deco Art.

Hero Bearcat Name: Farmer, My Hero

Hero Bearcat Location: Corryville Kroger - Short Vine Street, Cincinnati, OH

Artist profile: Kristel Kula-Graham is a 2000 UC DAAP grad with a fine arts degree in painting and drawing. Kula-Graham is the head of painting conservation at Weibold Studio in fine and antique art restoration with 16-years experience in restoring pottery, ceramic statues, sculptures, paper documents, hand-touched photographs, portrait miniatures, oil painting and frames of all kinds. Raised in the midwest and an organic farmer herself, Kula-Graham is creating her Bearcat in tribute to the American farmers in honor of the “credit and appreciation" they so richly deserve.

Artist profile: As a sophomore at Harrison High School, Ava Kugler is the design chief for the school drama club. Outside of school, Kugler enjoys painting and drawing and working with preschool children at her church.

Hero Bearcat Name: Architect of Next

Hero Bearcat Location: The Majestic (Uptown Rentals) - Cincinnati, OH

Artist profile: Both artists from this daughter/father Klocke duo come from artistic backgrounds, but this is their first experience with fiberglass statues. Angela Klocke holds a BFA in graphic design from Eastern Kentucky University and an MA in professional writing and editing from the University of Cincinnati, where she is employed as creative director for Marketing + Communications. In her spare time, Angela enjoys painting with oils and acrylics on canvas as well as set painting for local community theatre groups. Angela’s father, David Klocke, is a retired mechanical engineer from Procter & Gamble and is now more committed to his lifelong interest in art. As a boy, he studied under Aileen McCarthy (a student of Duveneck), later earning an associates of arts degree from Thomas Moore College. A former president and current member of the Cincinnati Art Club, David is a prolific painter especially enjoying plein air work.

Hero Bearcat Location: Firehouse No. 15 Bldg, Mount Adams - Cincinnati, OH

Artist profile: Vivian Zhuang is a senior at Villa Madonna Academy High School with a strong academic art and photography background. Recently, she was accepted to the Maryland Institute of Art where she will pursue her art education. Her Bearcat design as a firefighter battling a fire is in reference to the “The Scream” abstract painting by Edvard Munch. Her Hero Bearcat is in honor of firefighters she has personally known who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Meier says firefighters are truly our daily heroes.

Hero Bearcat Location: Warsaw Federal Incline Theater - Matson Place, Cincinnati, OH

Artist profile: De'Je Williams and Kimberly Kilby handpicked students with advanced art skills from Withrow University High School worked together to create this veterinarian bearcat. Some of the students from this group worked for Artworks creating beautiful murals in our community. The theme was inspired by the students’ love for all living creatures and support of the humane treatment of all animals.

Hero Bearcat Location: World Peace Bell Center - Newport, KY

Artist profile: Margie Metz and the student members of Seton High School National Art Honor Society have participated in a variety of public art projects including a “Save Our Local Waters” rain barrel painting and multiple murals inside the school and around the community. Their Bearcat theme, a Cincinnati police officer, is designed to honor the memory of Cincinnati’s fallen officers and appreciate their families.

Hero Bearcat Location: Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber, Downtown Cincinnati - Cincinnati, OH

Artist profile: Linda Augutis is a 1984 UC DAAP grad with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting and drawing and a Master of Fine Arts from Ohio State University. Augutis is an art teacher at Lakota East High School specializing in teaching, drawing and painting and AP Studio Art. She has been teaching art for 30 years. In her own artwork, Augutis experiments with various media with a personal approach. Her Bearcat is a tribute to the local backyard gardeners who enjoy digging in the earth and growing their own flowers, fruits and vegetables for enjoyment.

Hero Bearcat Name: Dr. Bearcut

Hero Bearcat Location: UC Health Ridgeway Office - Cincinnati, OH

Artist profile: With a background working in healthcare and a husband who is Chief of Vascular Surgery at UC, Margie Meier appropriately chose “Dr. Bearcut” as the name for her unsung hero, saving life and limb of patients for which most surgeons will only have a brief encounter. In the past, Meier has worked in mosaic glass design, and in 2012 Macy’s chose her FashSWINEista mosaic design for the second “Big Pig Gig” event at the World Choir Games in Cincinnati. Recently, Meier’s “Mosaic Warrior” design was chosen to hang at the Women’s Center, UC West Chester, winning third place among several entries. Currently some of Meier’s glass pieces can be found at Gallery Veronique at Harper’s Point in Montgomery.

Artist profile: As an AP Studio high school art student, Destanie Sexton has experience in drawing and printmaking. Since childhood she has been involved in a variety of art classes and advanced art programs.

Hero Bearcat Name: Guard Hard

Hero Bearcat Location: Purple People Bridge - Newport, Kentucky

Artist profile: Hannah Willmott is currently a sophomore at Villa Madonna Academy with a strong background in art, which she employs in school and during art classes in her spare time. With oil and acrylic painting as her favorite medium, she painted her Bearcat with unique colors and a creative design. After graduation Willmott plans to study biology or pre-medicine with hopes of becoming a physician, psychologist or art therapist.

Hero Bearcat Location: Liberty Center - Liberty Township, Ohio

Artist profile: With a history of working with ceramics, acrylic paints and watercolor, Evelyn Herrmann has created 2-D works from as small as one-inch-by-one-inch to giant wall murals. Color is something she particularly focuses on to enhance her pieces and plans to make her Bearcat pop with contrasting hues.

Hero Bearcat Name: Encore Bearcat

Hero Bearcat Location: Cincinnati Museum Center, Downtown Cincinnati - Cincinnati, OH 

Artist profile: Growing up in Tennessee, Patty New has worked as a dispatcher, real estate broker, small business owner, mortgage processor and artist. After changing career paths she headed west where she earned a Bachelor's of Fine Arts degree in psychology with a concentration in art therapy from the College of Santa Fe. Later, New earned a Master's of Art Education from the University of Cincinnati and now teaches art at Aiken High School. With a history of dreaming big and then following those dreams, New created not one, but two Hero Bearcats, which she says was a dream come true. New feels more fulfilled and complete after teaching art and having displayed her art both publically and privately in every city she has called home. She ultimately hopes to bring her art and the art of so many extraordinary artists back-to-life. "Encore" may spark a memory or start a conversation, make you linger in silence and peace or may invite you to go on a playful spontaneous scavenger hunt. Most of all, New hopes that "Encore" will help you realize that you too have life stories that are priceless.
