CCM Voice alumnus releases new album of Catalan music

Tenor Isaí Muñoz’s “Visca L’Amor” is available now on Bridge Records

Isaí Jess Muñoz (BM Voice, ’01) has found success as both a performer and an educator since he graduated from UC’s College-Conservatory of Music. After receiving master’s and doctoral degrees from Manhattan School of Music and Stony Brook University, he became an Associate Professor of Voice and Opera at the University of Delaware and the Vice President of the National Opera Association. Now, he is releasing his first solo album in over a decade with pianist Oksana Glouchko.

"Visca L’Amor: Catalan Art Songs of the 20th and 21st Centuries" is available for streaming or purchase through Bridge Records. Released earlier this year, the album features music from Catalonia, a region of Spain that includes the metropolis of Barcelona. “Visca L’Amor” consists of works by Frederico Mompou, Eduard Toldrà, Joan Comellas, Ricard LaMotte de Grignon, Narcís Bonet and Elisenda Fábregas, who contributed a newly-commissioned piece for the project.

Muñoz’s album is already garnering critical acclaim. One writer for Fanfare gave it five stars, saying, “The performing artists are as exemplary as the repertoire they interpret. Isaí Jess Muñoz is a lyric tenor with a warm and attractive voice, never losing its focus or tonal beauty. He sings the featured repertoire with keen attention to the music and text, enhanced by a rich dynamic and tonal palette.”

Another reviewer, also from Fanfare, said, “Anyone already devoted to Spanish vocal music is bound to be intrigued by the cultural importance of this release, but on musical grounds it deserves a wider audience, since every song is appealing and beautifully performed.”

Muñoz also regularly appears onstage and has performed with the Israel Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, American Symphony Orchestra, Mostly Mozart Festival, New York City Opera, and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater on Broadway.
