Ohio Capital Journal: Ohio economists say return to school will boost the economy
UC assistant professor of economics offers insights
The Ohio Capital Journal reports that Ohio Governor Mike DeWine plans to give teachers priority access to scarce doses of the coronavirus vaccine in order to get the state’s students back in the classroom by March.
Doing so will provide a substantial benefit to the Ohio economy both over the short and the long term, according to a panel of economists surveyed on the issue, including a University of Cincinnati expert.
Economists agreed that getting students back in school will boost the economy by allowing their parents to go back to work.
“Until schools reopen, there is a limit on how many individuals can go back to work,” said Michael Jones, UC assistant professor of economics. “With schools closed, the natural rate of unemployment is higher.”
