Yahoo News/WCPO-TV: How students volunteered at the Hearing Speech + Deaf Center in the pandemic
UC speech language hearing sciences students take advantage of in-person volunteering opportunites
Two speech language hearing sciences students in the UC College of Allied Health Sciences were featured in a WCPO-TV, Channel 9 story posted on Yahoo News, about their work at the Hearing Speech + Deaf Center in Cincinnati. The COVID-19 pandemic changed the hands-on experience in the field for students, but the Center allowed student volunteers to come in for short visits, which last between 10 and 15 minutes.
Jayse Card is a freshman who learned American Sign Language in high school and fell in love with it, but knew the pandemic would change her student experience.
"I knew there was going to be less opportunity to shadow and volunteer," Card said.
Sophomore Jordan Klemt says even just the short visits has made all the difference.
"Finally being able to come in and actually witness things is so exciting," Klemt said. "It's really exciting to finally get back into the groove of everything... It's not the same over Zoom."
