Hoxworth is calling on the Cincinnati community to support area hospitals over the next week with a lifesaving blood donation. Donors who roll up a sleeve at one of Hoxworth’s seven Neighborhood Donor Centers through July 16 will receive a limited-edition BBQ set.

Hoxworth spokesperson Cara Nicolas said that while the summer months are prime time for vacations and poolside BBQs, the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is known as “trauma season” for hospitals and blood banks across the country.

“As more people are going out and enjoying summertime leisure activities, our area hospitals are seeing a dramatic increase in the number of traumas resulting from accidents and injuries,” Nicolas said.  “Trauma victims may require a huge number of transfusions—and that is in addition to every day patients who need blood for things like planned surgeries and treatment for cancer.”

Blood banks across the country have issued pleas for blood and platelet donors as the national blood supply has dwindled in recent weeks. Nicolas notes that while Hoxworth’s inventory of blood is healthy at this time, a few traumas could quickly drain the local blood supply.

Hoxworth operates seven Neighborhood Donor Centers in the Tri-State area. Appointments for platelet donations are highly encouraged.  Masks are no longer required by donors.
