UC engineering receives Inspiring Programs in STEM Award
INSIGHT Into Diversity Magazine recognizes UC's inclusion leadership
The Office of Inclusive Excellence and Community Engagement in the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Cincinnati received the 2021 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the largest and oldest diversity and inclusion publication in higher education.
The Inspiring Programs in STEM Award honors colleges and universities that encourage and assist students from underrepresented groups to enter the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The University of Cincinnati will be featured, along with 78 other recipients, in the September 2021 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.
Inspiring Programs in STEM Award winners were selected by INSIGHT Into Diversity based on efforts to inspire and encourage a new generation of young people to consider careers in STEM through mentoring, teaching, research, and successful programs and initiatives.
"For three straight years, we have been recognized for our inspiring STEM programming. We are excited to be acknowledged for the work that we are doing to create an inclusive climate for our racially and ethnically diverse students, faculty, and staff. The work we do is extremely rewarding and recognition such as this award from INSIGHT keeps us pushing forward," said Assistant Dean of Inclusive Excellence and Community Engagement Whitney Gaskins, PhD, who leads the office.
INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine selected the office because of their wide array of multifaceted programs, services, initiatives that support, serve and inspire current and prospective UC students as well as alumni and community members of all ages. In partnership with campus stakeholders, local schools, and industry partners, the office is a driving force of community engagement with STEM education for the region.
Building on more than 33 years of strong foundations, the office’s dedicated staff and its team of collaborators coordinate innovative programming that aims to empower students to achieve their fullest potential and explore STEM pathways, remove barriers to success, celebrate the value of diversity and foster a community of inclusion on campus and in the STEM fields.
“We know that many STEM programs are not always recognized for their success, dedication, and mentorship for underrepresented students,” says Lenore Pearlstein, owner and publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. “We want to honor the schools and organizations that have created programs that inspire and encourage young people who may currently be in or are interested in a future career in STEM. We are proud to honor these programs as role models to other institutions of higher education and beyond.”
