Spectrum News: UC graduates to walk one year later

UC celebrates commencement postponed by COVID-19 pandemic

Spectrum News 1 highlighted the University of Cincinnati's efforts to recognize 2020 graduates on Saturday after last year's commencement was postponed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Oh, goodness. I'm so happy," UC graduate Tyla Thompson told Spectrum News. "I wasn't sure this day would ever happen."

UC recognized more than 600 graduates in the class of 2020 in each of two ceremonies Saturday at Fifth Third Arena. Thompson said the in-person celebration marked an important recognition of the milestone for her and her peers.

UC also hosted an in-person commencement Friday for the summer class of 2021.

Student commencement speaker Mariam Elgafy told Spectrum News that being together to mark the occasion was special.

"It's wonderful to be able to be there and support your friends, knowing the struggles we've all been through," Elgafy told Spectrum News.
