Watch UC Bearcat Lawrence Sapp compete in Paralympics Aug. 24-Sept. 3
Second-year UC student will give his all for the gold at Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan
Cheer on University of Cincinnati student and Paralympic athlete Lawrence Sapp from afar as he stands on the swimmer’s block in his first Paralympic swim heat on Aug. 24 in Tokyo, Japan. (Because of the 13-hour time difference, the swim schedule indicates Aug. 25, Toyko time.) He will compete first in the men’s 100-meter butterfly (listed as category S14 in the swim schedule). In the days to follow he will swim in the 200-meter individual medley and 100-meter backstroke (also listed as cateogry S14 in the swim schedule).
Sapp, representing Team USA, is a second-year UC Transition and Access Program student. He had World Championships medals in 2017 and 2019 and set two American records at the U.S. Paralympic Team Trials in 2021. Tokyo marks his Paralympic debut.
Earlier this year, UC shared Sapp’s life story, and his quest to compete in the Paralympic Games.
Sapp is also stepping into the limelight in another venue: a Degree Deodorant inclusive marketing campaign.
UPDATE: Lawrence Sapp placed 5th in the Men’s 100m Butterfly at the Tokyo Paralympics, finishing with a time of 57.36. His finish placements will be updated as the games continue.
