WXIX: November election could turn over entire Cincinnati City Council
Professor David Niven comments on the upcoming Cincinnati council election
The 2021 Cincinnati City Council race is complex, says David Niven, an associate professor in UC’s Department of Political Science.
All nine seats on the council are open, which includes the mayoral seat, and there are triple the number of candidates on the ticket.
With only one incumbent running for re-election, and Mayor John Cranley timing out to run for the Ohio gubernatorial seat, “we’re going to have a near total turnover” of city government, says Niven.
From prior studies, Cincinnatians typically vote for 6.4 candidates, leaving thousands of votes on the table.
“Even if you are doing extraordinarily well, and you’re ahead of dozens of candidates, you could still lose this election,” Niven told Fox 19 News Now.
