News Record: EnableUC students engineer 3D-printed hand
The student organization made a specialized prosthetic for a man who lost his hand in an accident
EnableUC, a student organization at the University of Cincinnati, serves as a bridge between engineering and medicine for people with upper limb differences, said Sumedha Kappagantula, a biomedical engineering student and EnableUC internal vice president. The News Record, the UC student news organization, featured EnableUC in a recent article.
Members of EnableUC provide low-cost custom prosthetics and they have designed and created 35 assistive devices and 17 prosthetics. One recent project tasked the group with building a 3D-printed prosthetic hand for a man who lost his hand in an accident with machine equipment. The prosthetic required special modifications to accommodate the man’s work as a machinist, Andrew Dilley told The News Record. Dilley is EnableUC’s president and a biomedical engineering student at UC.
EnableUC recently built prosthetic arms with elbow functionality for a Bolivian teenager who lost both of his hands in a dynamite explosion.
