WLWT: University of Cincinnati working to highlight and recruit first generation college students
Programs designed to help first-gen students navigate the college experience
First-generation college students are growing population welcomed on the University of Cincinnati campus. Students whose parents did not attend a traditional four-year college often encounter a unique set of barriers as they are often the first in their families to navigate the college admission and completion process.
Karrington Rainey, a third-year sociology major, spoke with WLWT Channel 5 about her journey as a first-generation student at UC, which has 7,992 Bearcats considered first-generation college students. They represent 91 countries and 39 states and 96% of first-gen students are employed or continuing their education upon graduation.
UC administrators, Dr. Yosmeriz Roman, assistant vice provost of enrollment management, and Suzette Combs, director of the Impact1 House, spoke with WLWT about the programs UC is offering to assist first-generation students.
