Investing in mental wellness: UC students and employees receive free premium subscription to Calm App

Check out the breathing techniques, sleep tracker and soothing soundscapes

Thousands of University of Cincinnati students and benefits-eligible employees are taking advantage of a free resource proven to help lower anxiety, decrease stress and improve sleep.

Students, faculty and staff now have access to a one-year premium subscription to Calm, a digital health app that includes a mood check-in, breathing techniques, a daily Calm reflection, a sleep tracker, resources for guided movement and soothing soundscapes.

Around 3,000 students have already signed up for Calm two weeks after the university offered it on October 11. Another 50 to 100 new users are signing up daily, said Brandy Reeves, director of UC’s Student Wellness Center.

"We are really excited to offer this resource to students, faculty and staff,” said Reeves. “Calm has so many different features that should work for everyone. The sleep stories are my favorite — they're a great way to fall asleep."

Reeves said most students who have downloaded Calm are using it for music, meditation and sleep stories. Users can listen to music for studying or to fall asleep, as well as try a master class session on a self-improvement topic.

We are really excited to offer this resource to students, faculty and staff.

The roll out of Calm to benefits-eligible faculty and staff has also begun. So far, more than 150 are using the app, and like students, the most popular features are music, meditations and sleep stories.

UC’s free Calm app is only available to current students and benefits eligible employees. Sign up using your email address of choice though you’ll need to include your UC (6+2) email to verify your status for the offer. If you have an existing Calm account, you can log in with your current username and password and take advantage of the free subscription.
