Raymond Walters College s Nursing Program Awarded Grant
The grant, nicknamed GAIN (Grant for Academic Initiative in Nursing), totaling $800,000 over three years, provides funds encouraging minority or economically disadvantaged students to enter or remain in college through mentoring and tutoring programs, tuition assistance, group counseling, or monthly stipends.
To assist the students further, University Hospital has agreed to cover half of the cost of the textbooks in support of the grant that totals almost an additional $20,000.
The grant begins this fall quarter with the students applying to enter the program and being interviewed by a committee. Students at both Raymond Walters and at UC Clermonts nursing programs are eligible to participate in the program. In addition to assisting the students, the programs faculty and staff will be offered diversity training to increase their cultural competencies and understand the academic needs of minorities.
