UC s Greek Organizations Hope To Survive A Big Fat Week Of Fun And Service

It’s a spring tradition that celebrates community in a week filled with competition and contribution. The University of Cincinnati’s Greek Week April 17-24 has some challenges ahead for UC’s 22 fraternities and 11 sororities. This year’s Greek Week is themed “Survivor.”

Organizations earn points for challenges like gummy-worm eating contests, talent shows and collecting donations. The top three organizations with the most points will be honored at the Greek Awards Banquet at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 24, at the Great Hall.

During spring quarter 2003, Greek organizations raised $6,280 for their philanthropies and committed themselves to more than 8,000 hours of community service, according to UC program coordinator Vicki Marsala. This year, she says fraternities and sororities are working together on a letter-writing campaign to raise money to help grant a child his wish through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. There are approximately 11,000 students who belong to UC Greek organizations – about four percent of the UC undergraduate student population.
