University of Cincinnati Graduates 3,923 Friday
Renowned advocate for peace and social justice Coretta Scott King will address the University of Cincinnati graduating class during Commencement ceremonies:

The University will confer an honorary degree upon Mrs. King during the ceremony. The University Oration will be delivered by Kurt Egbers, a senior in UCs College of Engineering, receiving a degree in chemical engineering.
Doors to Shoemaker Center will open at noon. Due to campus construction, guests are encouraged to arrive on campus at least 30 minutes before the program.
During the ceremony, UC will award degrees to 3,923 students, including:
- 608 associate degrees
- 2,175 bachelors degrees
- 752 masters degrees
- 388 doctoral degrees

In addition to Mrs. King, the University will present honorary degrees to:
- Randy Edelman, internationally acclaimed composer, musician, and musical arranger;
- Joan R. Herschede, who recently completed a nine-year term as University trustee;
- Cathryn Hosea Hilker, dedicated conservationist and educator;
- Donald E. Osterbrock, acclaimed astrophysicist and historian of astronomy; and
- Joseph A. Steger, president emeritus of the University of Cincinnati.
The University of Cincinnati Award for Excellence will be presented to:
- John F. Barrett, chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer, Western & Southern Financial Group; and
- Margo Taft Tytus, philanthropist and civic volunteer.

Commencement Day at the University of Cincinnati begins at 9:00 a.m. with the doctoral hooding ceremony at Fifth Third Arena, Shoemaker Center. Those who received doctoral degrees from UC between August 2003 and June 2004 will receive the academic hoods signifying this achievement during this ceremony. Following tradition, each doctoral candidate will receive the hood from his or her faculty advisor.

On a blisteringly hot summer day, laughter echoed through the cool, damp basement of the Avondale branch of the Cincinnati Public Library. Young teenagers huddled around a table littered with pencils and paper, rolling dice and bonding over a game of Dungeons & Dragons. University of Cincinnati undergraduate student Charitha Anamala sat behind a trifold card with a blazing red dragon on it, serving as the group’s Dungeon Master (DM) or campaign organizer. Within the fantasy setting she described, it was hard to tell the adventure was a lesson in ethics.
