10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.  “Arti-factual” animals roam UC’s Design College: Up to 500 first-year students in UC’s highly regarded College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning – which houses the country’s number-one ranked architecture and interior design programs – will turn their new college into a veritable zoo. The students will break into small groups in Room 4400, DAAP, to work out their first design problem:  making recognizable animals from cast-off items like old clothes, rocks, branches, lighting fixtures, wood, CDs and all manner of garbage.  This is the third year for the “DAAP Menagerie,” and past years have produced both humorous and realistic penguins (from plastic pop bottles and bags), flamingos (of pink paper), alligators (of Styrofoam packing squares with straw teeth), bunnies (with cough-drop eyes) and even a remarkably realistic Big Bird (made from a kiddie-school sign).

4-7:30 p.m.  Akawaaba – The annual Black Student Welcome will be held on Sigma Sigma Commons.

5-8 p.m.  Noche Latina – A student-sponsored event in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month will be held on McMicken Commons. The event features a night of Latino culture and celebration with traditional food and music. Noche Latina is sponsored by Alpha Psi Lambda Fraternity, the nation’s first co-ed Latin fraternity, which is organizing this year at UC.

The group is planning a “Build Your Own Quesadilla” game in the Great Hall of TUC as part of National Hispanic Heritage Month. Using cardboard cutouts of ingredients for a Quesadilla, players will “win” their ingredients by answering questions about Hispanic culture, language and geography. The first players to complete their quesadilla win a prize.
