Dennis D. Berkey, PhD, Mathematics, 74
Dennis D. Berkey, President of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, previously spent 30 years at Boston University, where he served as mathematics faculty member and department chair, Dean of Arts and Sciences, and University Provost. He received the Metcalf Cup and Prize for Excellence in Teaching from Boston University.
Daniel F. Danzl, BS, Biology, 72
Daniel F. Danzl is Professor and Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He is a past president of the American Board of Emergency Medicine and an internationally recognized physician in accidental hypothermia.
Fred L. Fricke, BS, Chemistry, 62, MS, Chemistry, 69
Fred L. Fricke led the U.S. Food & Drug Administration to establish one of the nations first Elemental Analysis Research Centers in Cincinnati. It became the FDA National Chemistry Forensic Center, which provided employment for hundreds of talented chemists during its 32year collaboration with the chemistry department.
Margaret J. Peg Valentine, BA, Spanish, 71
Peg J. Valentine is co-founder, Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer of Valentine Research, Inc., manufacturer of radar systems and detection equipment. Her leadership on the Romance Languages Departments Advisory Committee led to the creation of Valentine House, UCs first language immersion residence for students in French and Spanish.
Margaret M. Zeigler, MA, Geography, 92, PhD, Geography, 95
Margaret M. Ziegler is Deputy Director of the Congressional Hunger Center and adviser to the United National Secretariat staff, UNICEF, and International Fund for Agricultural Development. She taught at George Washington University and co-authored
Comprehensive Campaign Plan: An Architecture for
Coordination during Complex Humanitarian Emergencies.

Growing up on Ludlow Ave. in the Cincinnati neighborhood of Clifton, Harrison Fowler had planned to enroll in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) at the University of Cincinnati. UC was close to home, and ROTC seemed like the right choice. But life had other plans. At the last minute, Fowler withdrew from ROTC and enrolled to earn his bachelor’s in Spanish, which meant he needed a study-abroad experience to complete his degree. He was apprehensive, but completed his requirement in Madrid, in a move that would change the direction of his life. Says Fowler of his foreign-language major, and his experience abroad: “Speaking another language opens up a whole other world and relationships for you.”
