Institute of Higher Education at Shanghai Jiao Tong University Ranks UC in Top 200 World Universities

Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s original purpose in creating the ranking was to find out the gap between Chinese universities and world-class universities. This is the third year the institute has published its rankings on the Internet and the third year that UC has ranked in the top 200 internationally.

The rankings are based on four criteria and six “indicators.” For each indicator, the highest scoring institution is assigned a score of 100, and other institutions are calculated as a percentage of the top score:

  • Quality of Education
Alumni of an institution winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals (weighted 10%)
  • Quality of Faculty
Staff of an institution winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals (20%)
Highly cited researchers in 21 broad subject categories (20%)
  • Research Output
Articles published in Nature and Science (20%)
Articles Indexed in Science Citation Index-Expanded and Social Science Citation Index (20%)
  • Size of Institution
Academic performance with respect to the size of an institution (10%)

UC is among 52 universities tied for the position of #101–152; 90 universities in the United States made the list’s top 200.
