UC s Worldfest Marks a Decade of Celebrating the University s Worldwide Connections

The University of Cincinnati’s Worldfest invites the Cincinnati USA community to celebrate a world of fun, fashion, fellowship, food and food for thought. This year, the spring celebration marks a decade on a campus where 2,126 students representing 100 different countries –  as well as 400 international faculty – work and study. Furthermore, 754 students studied abroad in 35 countries, and cooperative education, founded a century ago at the University of Cincinnati, has 3,500 students working in 35 states and abroad in 16 countries – the overseas country hosting the largest number of co-op students, 14, is Germany.

This year’s Worldfest keynote speaker is Susan L. Taylor, editorial director of ESSENCE Magazine. She will lead a discussion and book-signing beginning at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 1, in the Great Hall of Tangeman University Center (TUC). Taylor was the first African-American woman to receive the magazine industry’s highest honor, the Henry Johnson Fisher Award from the Magazine Publishers of America. In 2002, she was inducted into the American Society of Magazine Editors’ (ASME) Hall of Fame, which honors the career-long records of excellence, creativity and impact of magazine journalists. She is a member of the Commission on Research in Black Education. Her talk will focus on “Lessons in Living,” the title of one of three books she has authored. The event is free and open to the public.

Previous speakers to address Worldfest include poet Maya Angelou, who again brought crowds to UC’s campus for an evening last February, Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel and author Caryl Phillips,  featured as part of Cincinnati’s “On the Same Page 2004” community wide reading project.
