Sigma Sigma Carnival At UC Promises A Blast From the Past
Bellbottoms, beads and tie-dyed shirts will reflect the summer of 69 Woodstock era at the 69th annual Sigma Sigma Carnival at the University of Cincinnati from 7 p.m.-1 a.m. Saturday, May 17, on UCs Sigma Sigma Commons, rain or shine. Student organizers say the Carnival of Love will feature fun for the entire family. Admission is free, with sales proceeds from food, beverages and games planned toward supporting a gift to the university.
UC student organizations plan and design the dozens of booths offering carnival entertainment. Entertainment from 8-10 p.m. includes two live bands, Losanti and Giovannis. The carnival will also feature its traditional fireworks celebration at 10 p.m., followed by a live DJ through 1 a.m.
This years carnival booths are as creative as ever, says carnival chair Ryan Vose, a Springboro, Ohio, senior who is graduating in June with a bachelors degree in electrical engineering. Highlights include the Pillow Fight of Love, a giant Twister board and a mechanical bull.
The carnival traditionally brings thousands of people to campus.
Sigma Sigma is a UC mens honorary organization that recognizes students who have made significant contributions to the university. Sigma Sigma is the oldest honorary organization at UC and will be celebrating its 110th anniversary during the 2008-2009 academic year. Previous gifts to the university supported by Sigma Sigma include funding toward the creation of Sigma Sigma Commons a six-acre open space with a 3,500 seat amphitheater and the 65-foot Ronald F. Walker Tower of Light, named in memory of a UC alumnus, Sigma Sigma member and supporter of the university.
The Sigma Sigma Carnival is one of the highlights of UCs Alumni Weekend May 16-18.
