CECH Honors Four Distinguished Alumni Over Homecoming Weekend
The University of Cincinnati's College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services (CECH) will honor four of its alumni at the colleges annual Distinguished Alumni Awards brunch on Sunday, Oc. 31. The Distinguished Alumni Award is the highest acknowledgment awarded to CECH alumni. Throughout the year, the college seeks nominations for alumni who have gone above and beyond in their field of work, hold positions of leadership, and are making a positive difference in their communities.
This year, each school of the college is represented by high-achieving alumni. The 2010 recipients are
Mr. Carlo X. Alvarez BSEd 07
Health Promotion and Education
Carlo Alvarez is founder and owner of Ethos Athletics. Alvarez has worked for University of Notre Dame athletics, the Cleveland Indians, and the Cincinnati Reds, where in addition to serving as head strength and conditioning coordinator, he managed Latin American athletic development programs for the team. He also serves as director of strength and conditioning for St. Xavier High School. In 2005, he founded Ethos, a sports performance training company that consults with companies like Nike, LaValle Metabolic Institute, and Wellington Orthopedic.
Dr. Monica J. Posey EdD 99
Educational Foundations
Dr. Posey is Vice President of Academics for Cincinnati State Technical & Community College, where she leads all academic divisions at Cincinnati State as well as the library, co-op, honors, and faculty development. Prior to working at Cincinnati State, Posey has worked at UC as an Assistant Director of Career Development, and for AT&T in Cincinnati and New Jersey in market research and project management. In addition to her degree from UC, Posey holds a BS from Cornell and and an MBA from Wharton. She was named Career Woman of Achievement by the Cincinnati YWCA in 2008.
Mrs. Mary A. Ronan, BSEd 77
Secondary Education
A 32-year veteran of Cincinnati Public School system, Mary Ronan has served as superintendent of Cincinnati Public Schools since 2008. She has held administrator roles at Kilgour and Woodward schools, and early in her career taught at Merry Middle School and Withrow High School. Ronan oversees a district of 34,000 students and under her leadership, Cincinnati Public Schools achieved an Effective rating on the Ohio Report Card, earning national prominence among urban districts.
Mr. Thomas H. Streicher, Jr.
BS 81 Criminal Justice
Tom Streicher is Colonel and Chief of the Cincinnati Police Department. Streicher has been an invaluable asset to the School of Criminal Justice, helping to forge partnerships between UC and the Cincinnati Police, including the Cincinnati Initiative to Reduce Violence (CIRV). Streicher serves on the board of directors of the Dan Beard Council of Boy Scouts of America and the Childrens Hospital Medical Center Safe Kids Coalition. He graduated magna cum laude with a degree in criminal justice from UC, and is also a graduate of the Southern Police Institute, 80th Administrative Officers Course, and a member of the National Executive Institute (NEI/FBI), 23rd session.

Carol R. Steger, former first lady of the University of Cincinnati, died on August 12, 2025 at the age of 85. Steger served as UC’s first lady from 1984 to 2013. Her husband, Joseph A. Steger, was UC’s 24th president and had the second-longest term in the university’s history. President Steger died in 2013.

July 1, 2025, marked the one-year anniversary for Lisa Huffman in the role of Dean of University of Cincinnati’s College of Education, Criminal Justice, Human Services, and Information Technology – CECH or, as she refers to it, CECH-IT (“catch it”). It’s been a year of undeniable changes and challenges, but Huffman is focused on celebrating what she calls "the best job in the world."
