Lindner Marketers Earn Best Paper Award at Global Conference

Four from the Marketing Department at the Carl H. Lindner College of Business earned  the best paper award at the global 2013 American Marketing Association’s Winter Marketing Educators' Conference in Las Vegas.

Professor Karen Machleit, head of the marketing department at the Lindner College of Business, and current and former doctoral students Xin Wang, PhD '14, Xiaoqi Han, PhD '11, Scott Wright, PhD ’12, submitted “The Effect of Tenure Confidence on Job Satisfaction Among Untenured Faculty” to earn the award.

Han is now an assistant professor of marketing at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and Wright is an assistant professor of marketing at Providence College in Rhode Island.

The paper focuses on job satisfaction factors such as confidence in obtaining tenure, publication output, teaching manageability, salary, location and family, and how they affect current untenured junior faculty.

“In addition, we demonstrate that school type, for example research versus balanced, moderates the relationship between tenure confidence and job satisfaction,” Wang says of survey findings from153 assistant professors.

“Differences between institution types are explained by the unequal weight of research output in determining tenure promotion,” Wang says. “More specifically, research output is shown to predict job satisfaction among untenured professors within research, but not balanced, institutions.”
