Ohio Gov. John R. Kasich to Address UC s December Graduates
Ohio Gov. John R. Kasich will address graduates at the University of Cincinnati during Commencement ceremonies at
9 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 14
, in Fifth Third Arena, Shoemaker Center.
At that time, Kasich will also receive the UC Presidents Award for Excellence.
Kasich was sworn in as Ohios 69th governor in January 2011, and according to the governors website, his top priority is to create a jobs-friendly climate so Ohioans can get back to work. His official bio states that his achievements include closing an $8 billion budget shortfall without a tax increase, reducing taxes by $3 billion, cutting wasteful spending and eliminating red tape. Unemployment is down, more Ohioans are finding work, and all three credit rating agencies now give Ohio a stable credit outlook.
He previously served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from central Ohio for 18 years. As a U.S. Representative, Kasich served on the House Budget Committee, and became chair of that committee in 1995, leading the effort to balance the federal budget for the first time since 1969. He also helped enact historic welfare reform.
After leaving Congress in 2000 and running for U.S. president, Kasich worked as a managing director in the Investment Banking Division of Lehman Brothers. He was also a commentator for FOX News and a Presidential Fellow at his alma mater, The Ohio State University.
Kasich is the author of New York Times best-selling books. Courage is Contagious was published in 1998. His second book, Stand for Something: The Battle for Americas Soul, was published in 2006. Every Other Monday was published in 2010 and focuses on the importance of faith in making both everyday choices and life-changing decisions.
Kasich, 61, is a 1974 graduate of The Ohio State University.
