UC Chemistry Students Could Save Big With New 'includED' eText Program
This fall, students enrolled in CHEM 1040 on UCs main campus will be able to save a trip to the bookstore, and a few bucks as well. The chemistry department is partnering with UC Bookstores to pilot a new program called includED. Developed by the Follett Corp., the includED program offers students digital access to all course materials and texts. To make things even easier, students are enrolled automatically and the cost of the program is bundled with tuition fees. In addition to easier access, the UC Bookstores were also able to negotiate a reduced price for the digital materials, resulting in a 37 percent cost savings to the students. There is also an optional low cost print book available to students who want to have a print version. With over 1,700 students enrolled in the course, adopting this program will save students over $95,000.
The includED program recently had a test run at another local school. Cincinnati State Technical and Community College implemented the program to streamline their paralegal studies department. Students there were able to save up to 44 percent on the cost of course materials. School officials praised the program, and hope to expand its use in the future.
The includED program is part of UCs commitment to growing their eLearning ecosystem, which recently received a major overhaul incorporating Blackboard with the new Canopy network. Growing up on Ludlow Ave. in the Cincinnati neighborhood of Clifton, Harrison Fowler had planned to enroll in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) at the University of Cincinnati. UC was close to home, and ROTC seemed like the right choice. But life had other plans. At the last minute, Fowler withdrew from ROTC and enrolled to earn his bachelor’s in Spanish, which meant he needed a study-abroad experience to complete his degree. He was apprehensive, but completed his requirement in Madrid, in a move that would change the direction of his life. Says Fowler of his foreign-language major, and his experience abroad: “Speaking another language opens up a whole other world and relationships for you.”
