Why study Community-Engaged Research for Health?

As community engagement initiatives within academic centers continue to mobilize, the need for well-trained community-engaged researchers is vital to the success of an institution’s community engagement initiatives. This Certificate will be geared towards graduate students, faculty members, and academic or community researchers who are interested in integrating community engagement into their research design. Graduates from the Certificate will obtain the skills and resources needed in order to conduct community-engaged research. 

Admission Requirements

Students applying to the Graduate Certificate in Community-Engaged Research for Health must meet the minimum Graduate School requirements for post-baccalaureate status. Applicants must have a bachelor's degree from a U.S.-accredited college or university or an equivalent degree from another country, a minimum grade-point average of 3.00 or foreign equivalent, a personal statement and statement of career goals, and at least one letter of recommendation.

International applicants from non-English speaking countries must demonstrate proficiency in English in one of two ways: having completed the USMLE or providing official scores from one of several standardized language tests (IELTS score of 6.5, TOEFL score of 96ibt).

Eligible applicants will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee.

CEnR for Health is a unique subset of clinical and translational research that has its own framework of guiding principles, ethics, and methods. Completion of this Certificate will enhance the skills of principal investigators, clinical research staff, and graduate students, making them more marketable to employers, and more prepared to ethically and effectively design, implement, and participate in CEnR for Health. Given the rising value and importance of CEnR, this Certificate will give researchers an advantage when applying for jobs at the UC Academic Health Center as well as Clinical Research Organizations (CROs) or when transitioning between roles.
