Alliance for the Arts in Research Universities

Sticky Innovation A2RU

As the home to some of the nation’s most highly-ranked arts programs, the University of Cincinnati strives to transform its students into exceptional leaders, thinkers and makers who will forever change their fields. The Office of the Provost promotes experiential learning, transdisciplinary research and teaching that challenges and supports students of all ages, races and backgrounds to foster creativity and innovations that will positively impact society. UC has joined over 30 other institutions in the Alliance for the Arts in Research Universities (a2ru), devoted to ensuring a wide spectrum of arts, arts-integrative research, curriculum, programs and interdisciplinary collaborations across national research institutions.

As part of this partnership, UC has brought in wide-ranging, stellar new programs and courses fostering interdisciplinary collaborations in the arts, including classes such as Sticky Innovation: Solving the Problem of the Bees through Engineering and Art. A cross-college collaboration between the College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning (DAAP) and the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, this class immerses students in everything pertaining to bees – artwork, literature, science – and includes a visit to a local beehive farm for both artistic and engineering-based inquiry. Another example, Critical Visions Certificate, is a joint endeavor between the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences and DAAP that teaches students how to effectively combine critical theory and social analysis with art, media, and design practice. Through the cross-college curriculum, students critically examine the relationships among power, image, and imagination; situate and theorize vision alongside other modes of perception; and historically and cross-culturally explore a range of forms of seeing.
