Why study Biomedical Informatics?
Biomedical Informatics (BMI) is an interdisciplinary field that combines knowledge of information sciences and medical sciences to optimize the use and application of biomedical data across the spectrum - from molecules to individuals to populations.
BMI encompasses computational and analytical methods that advance biomedical research, as well as the implementation and management of information technology used to improve the practice of healthcare. The field spans and draws upon a number of related disciplines, including bioinformatics, genomics, systems biology, biostatistics, big data, and healthcare analytics.
The BMI Graduate Certificate is a joint program between the UC College of Medicine and UC College of Engineering & Applied Science, in partnership with Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. It trains students from both quantitative and biomedical backgrounds to develop and apply computational methods addressing current problems in biomedicine, as well as to design and implement clinical informatics systems. The program also enables the training of clinicians and health professionals who are interested in the integration of the electronic health record (EHR) and related systems with clinical practice and research.
Admission Requirements
- Completed Baccalaureate Degree or higher (from accredited institution)
- Preferred 3.0 GPA or higher
- English Proficiency Requirement (international applicants only)
- TOEFL or IELTS
The application requires students to submit official transcripts from all previous institutions attended (unless already on file with the University of Cincinnati), as well as two letters of recommendation.
Successful applicants typically have a strong quantitative and/or computational background and a keen interest in biomedical informatics or a related discipline. Those with a major of study in areas such as biology, mathematics, computer science, bioengineering, chemistry, or statistics are well positioned to enter the program.
