Academic Misconduct Flow Chart

Academic Misconduct Steps

When alleged academic misconduct is discovered, a notification form is sent to the student within ten days. A review meeting is scheduled for five days later. When the review meeting is held, the faculty member has five days to decide the next steps listed below.

  • If at this point, the faculty member decides to dismiss allegations, the case is closed, or
  • If at this point, the faculty member decides to move forward with allegations, the resolution form is sent to the student with proposed sanctions. The student has ten days to respond with one of the options below.

The student can accept the sanctions

  1. The faculty provides a copy of the resolution form and materials to CCA
  2. The case is closed

Or, the student can dispute the sanctions

  1. The College Hearing Panel reviews and determines sanctions
  2. The Hearing Chair then sends the outcome letter
  3. The case is closed
  1. A College Hearing Panel will take place
  2. The College Hearing Panel decides responsibility and possible sanctions
  3. The Hearing Chair sends the student an outcome letter
  4. The case is closed
This is a linear, text-only version of the academic misconduct process shown in the flowchart. It describes all decision points and outcomes in reading order. 1. Alleged Misconduct and Initial Notification Alleged misconduct is discovered. A Notification Form is sent to the student within 10 days. A review meeting is scheduled for 5 days later, as stated on the Notification Form. The review meeting is held. After this meeting, the faculty member has 5 days to decide the next steps. At this point, there are two possible faculty decisions: Option A: Faculty member decides to dismiss allegations. Outcome: Case Closed. Option B: Faculty member decides to move forward with allegations. A Resolution Form is sent to the student with proposed sanctions. The student has 5 days to respond. 2. Student Response to Resolution Form Once the Resolution Form is sent, there are three branches based on the student’s response: 2.1 Student Does Not Respond Student does not respond within 5 days. Sanctions are final. Faculty provides a copy of the Resolution Form and materials to CCA (College Conduct Administrator or equivalent). Outcome: Case Closed. 2.2 Student Accepts Responsibility This branch has two sub-options depending on whether the student agrees with sanctions. Step 1: Student accepts responsibility. Option 1: Student accepts sanctions. Accepts sanctions. Faculty provides a copy of the Resolution Form and materials to CCA. Outcome: Case Closed. Option 2: Student disputes sanctions. Dispute sanctions. Case goes to a College Hearing Panel, which reviews and determines sanctions. The hearing chair sends an outcome letter to the student. Outcome: Case Closed. 2.3 Student Denies Responsibility Student denies responsibility. Case is referred to a College Hearing Panel. The College Hearing Panel decides responsibility and sanctions. The hearing chair sends an outcome letter to the student. Outcome: Case Closed. 3. Note on Missed Review Meeting There is an additional note at the lower right of the flowchart: “Missed Review Meeting – If student does not attend scheduled review meeting, the faculty should send the student a completed resolution form.” This means that if the student misses the review meeting, the process continues by sending the student a completed Resolution Form, and the case then follows the same student-response options described in Section 2 (no response, accepts responsibility, or denies responsibility).
