Application and Hiring Resources

Welcome to our Application and Hiring Resources page, your one-stop-shop for all you'll need to know about the application and hiring process at UC.

This page provides an overview of what to expect. It covers searching for and applying to a job, New Employee Orientation, and the onboarding process.

Hiring at UC is handled by the individual colleges and departments who evaluate and select their own candidates and new hires. We know how much time and effort goes into your application, which is why no matter what, a person, not a computer, will review and evaluate all of your materials.

University of Cincinnati vs. UC Health

Please note: The University of Cincinnati (UC) and UC Health are different and separate organizations. We are unable to provide any information regarding the UC Health hiring process.

Application, Interview, and Hiring Process

The first step is looking for a job. We post all of our jobs on our website where you can filter for available jobs by keyword, title, category, facility, or by the date was posted. You'll also have the opportunity to create job alerts so you'll get available jobs that match your skills right to your inbox.

Pro Tip

  • Make sure to review the required education and required experience section of each job posting. You must meet the minimum qualifications listed there to be interviewed and hired for the position.

As you search job postings you may have questions around salary range, work location, sponsorship requirements, and more. Because UC has a wide range of positions, colleges, and units, the answers to these questions tend to be "it depends on the position." While we know this answer may lack specificity, all of these questions will be answered during the hiring process!

Salary Range

The salary range can vary by position, level, and department, and may be included in the job posting. Otherwise, additional details would be given during the hiring process itself.

We are unfortunately not able to obtain salary details for each individual posting, but each search team will inform you during the hiring process.

Work Location and Work Arrangements

The work location and work arrangements can vary by position, level, and department. The work location and expected work arrangements (Onsite, hybrid, or remote) may be indicated in the position description. Otherwise, additional information would be given during the hiring process.

Sponsorship

While not every posting is eligible for sponsorship, we do not wish to deter applications. It varies by posting and further details would be provided following an active application.

Creating an Applicant Profile

Once you've found a job that matches your skills, it's time to apply! While browsing open positions works well on a phone or tablet, you'll need to use a computer for the application. You'll need to apply to all UC jobs online and are required to create a candidate profile to submit applications.

If you don't have access to a computer, we'd recommend visiting your local library, job services center, or our Human Resources office. Computers are available in the Human Resources office Monday through Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, and one of our front desk employees will be available to assist.

Please make sure that you're applying for jobs directly from our careers site. Third party websites may not accurately reflect the actual posting for UC positions. These websites scrape our positions and may include inaccurate information regarding the date posted, salary, and status of the position. If you apply via a third party website, our hiring team will not receive your application. Make sure you apply directly on our careers website.

To create a profile, go to our careers site, click "Menu" in the top right corner, select "Sign in or Create Account," follow the instructions listed, and then select "Create Account" at the bottom. Make sure your profile is complete and current.

Filling Out an Application

Once you have a profile you can apply to any job posting, at any time. Just log in on our careers site using your candidate profile. You'll then be able to filter positions using the Faculty, Staff, or Students sections, or you can use the search bar to see what's posted based on keywords you enter. Click on a position to view more information. If you'd like to apply to this position, select "Apply Now" in the top right corner of the page. Then fill out the application and select "Apply" at the bottom of the page. You can also select "Save" if you are not ready to submit the application and would like to come back and work on it later.

When applying, be sure you submit all the materials needed for that position. A resume is always required, and some job postings will indicate specific documents required for a complete application. Refer to the job posting to confirm all of the documents you'll need to provide. You'll attach all required documents in the section titled "My Documents." There is a section for your resume/CV, References, Cover Letter, and Additional Documents for anything else you need to upload. Make sure to enter information in every box with a red asterisk (*), as you'll receive an error message if any required field is left blank. You can save progress on your application as you go by selecting the "Save" button at the bottom of the page. You can also save an application and return later if you are not able to complete it in one sitting.

If you're applying to multiple jobs, you will need to submit a unique application for each. Once you've created a job profile, you will use that as a starting point for all new applications. Some information will be automatically added to each application.

Applying as a Current Employee

Remember, if you're a current UC employee, you will need apply via SuccessFactors. To apply to a job, login to your SuccessFactors account, select the "Home" tab at the top of the screen, select the "Careers" tab, and then search for a position using any of the filters or by entering search terms. Once you find a position you'd like to apply for, select the position and then the red "Apply" button at the top.

Pro Tips

  • When writing your cover letter, feel free to address it using, “Dear Hiring Team,” or “To Whom it May Concern,” depending on your preference.
  • UC does not have the ability to accept “general” applications.  You must apply to a specific, posted position to be considered.  If you don’t see something that is a good fit for you today, please consider signing up for Job Alerts.  When you turn on your job alerts, new positions that may fit your interests get sent to the email address you have listed in our system.
  • Many times, UC job postings will list a specific set of required materials (such as resume, cover letter, or references) that must be submitted with your application. We will not consider your application without these. Some postings also list an “apply by” date. Please check for this and be sure to get your materials in by that date. Otherwise, as long as the application link is still available on the UC Careers site, you are welcome to apply.
  • As part of your application, you will be required to submit a response to our Team Culture question. This question reads:  “As an equal opportunity employer, we work to bring out the best in our students, faculty and staff to collaborate, create, innovate, and compete in a global society.  We are seeking individuals who want to be are part of a dynamic team.  Please share your definition of team and what makes a team function successfully.  For applicants of Director level positions (or above) summarize your leadership style and how you leverage the experiences and skills of your team to foster innovation, impact, and a positive working/learning environment.”

Once you’ve submitted your application, you'll receive an email notification to the email address you listed in your candidate profile letting you know you've successfully submitted the application. If you don't receive this email, make sure your email address is correct in your profile and check that your application status says "submitted" and not "saved."

After applying, you may be eager to hear further updates and information. You can access your candidate profile at any time to see the progress and status of your application by logging into your profile. The hiring process and timeline is set by the hiring department and varies by area and position. Because of this, we are not able to speak on the timeline of a position as it is unique across each department and position. The only information we can relay on specific application statuses is the same as what is indicated on your account. All applications are reviewed by the department, so the process can take a while. We receive a high volume of applicants, but rest assured you will receive an update either way via email.

Finally, keep in mind that even if you meet minimum qualifications for the job, you aren't guaranteed an interview. A decision to move an applicant forward in the process is based on a variety of qualifications, including those stated in the job posting, as well as the minimums.

Pro Tips

  • Be sure to check your “spam” email box regularly after you submit your application.  Unfortunately, correspondence from UC may be routed to this folder by your email provider and we wouldn’t want you to miss our messages.
  • You may notice that a job you've applied for sometimes looks like it is re-posted. The date listed on the job postings on our careers site is not the date they are posted. The date reflected is a reference date for our system, so the position you applied for may not have been re-posted even if it appears so.
  • If you are not selected for a position, you may want some feedback on the reasons why. While our search teams do their best to give timely and detailed feedback, it is not always possible due to the volume and nature of our hiring processes.

Viewing Your Submitted Application

Once you're application has been successfully submitted, you can view the application and status by logging into your profile.

Editing Your Submitted Application

Please make sure your application materials are up to date as you apply. UC also only accepts one application per applicant for each job posting, so make sure you review carefully before submitting. Once the application is submitted, you won't be able to make any changes or edits to the application itself. In other words, you will not be able to re-submit an application for a position you've already applied for. Until your application is under review, you are able to go into your application to update any documents if needed.

If your email address changes during the application process, you can change the email address where the notifications about the application are sent. You are not able, however, to change the email address used to log into your job profile. To change the notification email address, log in to your profile and change the email in your profile. Again, this will only change where notification emails are sent, not the email you will use to login to your account.

Withdrawing Your Submitted Application

You can withdraw an application after it's been submitted at any time. Log in to your profile and select "Jobs Applied." Next, choose the application you want to withdraw and select "Withdraw Application" at the bottom of the screen.

Pro Tip

  • If you accidentally withdraw your application, you won't be able to reapply for the same position. If this happens by accident, contact jobs@uc.edu for assistance!

Updating Your Profile

If you need to make any updates to your candidate profile information, first, sign in. Next, select “Profile Information,” update your information, select "Save” at the bottom.

Deleting Your Profile

You can delete your entire profile at any time. To do so, start by logging in and selecting the Options tab in the top right of the screen. You'll then have an option to "Delete Profile."

You got an interview, hooray! This is our chance to get to know you, learn about your experience, and understand your unique skills. With that said, it’s also your chance to get to know us! Be sure to come prepared with any questions you may have regarding the role. We’re excited to meet you!

The hiring authority from the college or department of the role will determine the specific interview process. It may be virtual, in person, or both, and there may be more than one interview. Some roles may require testing, either written or practical. If this is required, we will guide you through this process.

After the interview, someone from UC will follow up with you either via email or a phone call to provide feedback or any potential next steps.

How to Prepare

UC uses behavioral based interviewing, so you should expect these types of questions as part of your interview process.  Since each college or department has hiring authority, each set of questions will be different and focused on the competencies that are needed for the position.  As you prepare for your interview, you will want to think of examples of your previous work and how those might relate to the job you have applied to.

Pro Tips

  • Prepare examples where your work has had a positive impact or where you have gone above and beyond.  You will also want to think of examples where things didn’t go so well and be ready with what you learned from those situations.
  • Practice, practice, practice!  You can find lots of examples of behavioral based questions on You Tube.  Review these and then find someone you trust to practice your interview skills with.
  • For virtual interviews, be sure to test your technology in advance and think about the space where you will interview. Be sure to take a look at what will be visible in the background while you are on camera.  Make sure it is a quiet spot where you can focus and won’t be disturbed.

Now for the most exciting part! If you are determined to be the best person for the role, you will receive a verbal offer followed by a written offer with role details and information about UC’s benefits package.

Once you accept your role online, a required background check will be performed and your start date will be decided.

Pro Tip

  • Most UC roles begin on a Monday start date.  Think about what a good start date might be for you.  Consider things like any notice you may need to provide to a current employer or any planned vacations or time off.

The onboarding process is designed to help set you up for success in your new role. Onboarding consists of three steps:

  1. Completing online paperwork before your first day
  2. New Employee Orientation where you will attend an in-person new hire onboarding session that will help you get to know UC, learn about your benefits, explore employee resources, and meet other new hires.
  3. Department-specific onboarding where your new department will conduct your training and help you acclimate to your role.

It will take take time to get used to your new position and understand all of the Benefits and resources available to you. We recommend making a concerted effort to explore all that Human Resources has to offer during your time as a UC employee.
