Deflating Physical Computation: A Basic Schema for Computational Explanation

My dissertation evaluates proposals which claim that computational neuroscience explains only if some brain functions really are computational. I argue that this overstates what neurocomputational models establish. I offer a deflationary account whereby these models explain by capturing relevant difference-makers at different levels of abstraction, without requiring the brain to literally compute.
