Faculty Award Programs

Our Professorships programs reward our most outstanding faculty with a title, platform, and dedicated research line to conduct and share their work broadly, and include mid-career, senior, and emerging scholar opportunities.  

This five-year professorship recognizes exceptional mid-career and senior scholars, providing $25,000 in dedicated research funding. 

This three-year professorship, open to advanced junior, mid-career, and senior scholars, recognizes exemplary faculty engaged in public humanities work, providing $12,000 in dedicated research funding and three course releases. 

This three-year professorship, open to advanced junior, mid-career, and senior scholars, recognizes exemplary faculty engaged in socially engaged social science research, providing $12,000 in dedicated research funding and three course releases. 

Our travel programs support faculty whose research requires travel, as well as those presenting research and creative work at establised academic conferences domestically and abroad. 

This travel award program provides up to $1,500 per year for faculty presenting their work at academic conferences within the United States and its territories.

This travel award program provides up to $3,500 over any two-year period for faculty presenting their research or creative work at conferences outside the United States and its territories.

This award program provides up to $4,000 for research related travel, including lodging, per diem, and direct research expenses.

We offer several research award programs that cover direct and collaborative research costs, publication support, and funds to convene and facilitate manuscript workshops. 

This research award program supports faculty with up $10,000 for direct research costs, research collaboration costs, or cost-share grants.

This research award program provides faculty with up to $1,500 to defray the costs of indexing, translation, copyediting, copyright clearance, and other publication-related costs.

Supporting faculty working on individual research projects, Taft provides up to $2,000 each year to Taft-eligible units to support disciplinary-based or low-cost research.

Faculty working with summer undergraduate researchers can find stipend support for both mentors and mentees through our mentorship programs. 

Our signature faculty mentorship program provides $4,000 in faculty and student stipend support for undergraduate researchers working with a faculty mentor on faculty or student-led summer research projects. 

We support faculty working with McNair Summer Scholars with $2,200 in faculty and student stipend support. 

Each year Taft nominates and sponsors faculty on a competitive basis for select external opportunities that will advance their research and/or writing, covering all costs associated with thier participation. 

Intended to assist humanities scholars or scholars working on a humanities project, the four-week residency provides a focused period of supported research (with dedicated library staff) and intellectual exchange at the NHC, in the Research Triangle Park, NC. 

Fostering a supportive cohort community to encourage intellectual exchange among  participants, the 10-day residential retreat is designed to provide dedicated writing time along with expert guidance in writing and publishing to significantly advance scholarly projects. 

Taft sponsors cohorts of faculty, students, and staff from member units and/or Taft-sponsored Research Groups to receive training and mentoring from editors and journalists on crafting, refining, and publishing their own op-eds through the virtual, two-day workshop. 

Taft sponsors a small cohort of faculty and postdoctoral fellows for the virtual, six-week program where they are guided through the process of crafting and pitching a book proposal to a publisher, learn submission strategies, and gain peer insights from other faculty sharing their knowledge and experiences.
