Hoffman Family Legacy
Hoffman Honors Scholars is fortunate to be connected with Zoë Bullock, the great-niece of Hugh Hoffman. We wanted to share her words of encouragement here.
To the Third Cohort of UC Hoffman Honors Scholars,
I wish I could be with you today, but since I cannot due to my own academic and personal schedule, I wanted to share a little about Hugh Hoffman and what he has meant to me, and what this opportunity means for you.
Hugh was my great-uncle, although that title never quite captured our relationship. To me, he carried more of a grandfather-like presence. He was a quiet presence; sometimes almost ghostlike, but he never needed to be the loudest person in the room to make an impression. He had a way of being there, observing, listening, and then offering something meaningful when it mattered. I later found out he had the nickname "the ghost" here at UC during events where he would come, observe, enjoy, and then leave without causing a fuss, for years. Hearing these stories made me laugh; it was truly Hugh as himself.
Hugh believed in helping the people around him. He shared his experiences, his perspective, and the lessons he had gathered throughout his life. He encouraged others to learn from the world and, in turn, to share what they had learned with others. One of the lessons I carry from Hugh is to seek growth and experience the world deeply.
When I think about what it means to grow, I don't think he meant simply achieving more or becoming more accomplished. I think he meant remaining open to new ideas, new people, new places, and new ways of seeing the world. Growth comes from allowing your experiences to change you for the better.
Seek growth wherever you find it. Travel not simply to see the world, but to experience it. Be a visitor rather than a tourist in all aspects of your life: enter places with curiosity, listen to the people who call them home, learn their stories, and allow each experience to change the way you see your own worldview.
I hope that is the spirit you bring to your time as Hoffman Honors Scholars.
You have been given an opportunity to grow not only as students, but as people. Seek out experiences that challenge your assumptions. Go somewhere unfamiliar. Meet people whose lives that are vastly different from your own. Ask questions. Be willing to be changed by what you encounter. And when you learn something worth sharing, share it with others.
That is one of the ways I believe we can honor Hugh. His impact was often quiet. He didn't need recognition to help someone. He simply shared what he knew and offered what he could. His experiences became something that other people could carry forward.
As the third cohort of Hoffman Scholars, you are now part of that continuing legacy. I hope you make it your own. Support one another. Learn from one another. Share your experiences. And remember that the mark you leave on people may not always be something you see immediately.
Hugh taught me, in his own quiet way, that life is meant to be experienced, that there is always more to learn, and that what we gain becomes more meaningful when we share it with others.
I wish I could be there to say this to you in person. Instead, I hope these words can serve as my welcome, and as a small piece of Hugh that I can pass on to you.
Best wishes, and welcome back,
Zoë Bullock
