Microsoft 365 Storage Changes
Microsoft recently announced that it will no longer offer “unlimited” cloud storage as part of licensing agreements with higher education institutions.
The university is taking steps now to avoid additional costs associated with Microsoft storage changes when they go into effect July 1, 2026.
Storage limits for select Microsoft 365 services
New default storage limits have been established for OneDrive accounts (100GB), Teams/SharePoint sites (100GB), and student email accounts (50GB).
DTS rolled out the storage limits to new OneDrive accounts, Teams/SharePoint sites, and student email accounts established on or after Dec. 10, 2024.
Storage limits will be introduced to existing accounts in two phases.
New default storage limits will go into effect Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2025, only for current students, faculty, and staff whose existing accounts are well under the new storage quotas.
The majority (99%) of current UC students, faculty, and staff fall into this category, which includes:
- Personal OneDrive accounts with storage utilization under 100GB.
- Teams/SharePoint sites with storage utilization under 100GB.
- Student email accounts with storage utilization under 50GB.
DTS will communicate directly with current students, faculty, and staff whose storage utilization is getting close to or exceeds the new default storage limits before the quotas go into effect later in the spring semester.
A small percentage (less than 1 percent) of accounts fall into this category, which includes:
- Personal OneDrive accounts with storage utilization near, at, or exceeding 100GB.
- Teams/SharePoint sites with storage utilization near, at, or exceeding 100GB.
- Student email accounts with storage utilization near, at, or exceeding 50GB.
What you can do
DTS has put together tips to guide UC students, faculty, and staff through the changes and help make the most of their available storage in email, OneDrive, and Teams.
