Policies

The Learning Commons has policies that provide support and structure around interactions within our office. Click on the policy title below to read the full text. All students are expected to follow these policies while interacting with our office.

Homework Policy Update

We’ve updated our homework policy. Check it out before your next visit!

The Learning Commons recognizes that students with disabilities may require an accommodation to fully participate in scheduling and/or participating in services.

To request an accommodation and/or assistance in scheduling services, please email or call our Front Desk (learningcommons@uc.edu; 513-556-3244) to be connected with a staff member who will help you find appropriate support.

To ensure fair and equitable access to our academic support services, the following guidelines apply to scheduling appointments:

  1. Advance Scheduling Limit: Appointments cannot be scheduled more than 7 days and less than 24 hours in advance. This allows all students an equal opportunity to access available sessions.
  2. 12-Hour Cancellation Requirement: Appointments cannot be cancelled within 12 hours of scheduled time. This policy helps us maintain a predictable and organized schedule for both students and staff.
  3. Weekly Academic Coaching Appointment Limit: Students may schedule only one Academic Coaching appointment per week. This limit ensures all students have access to coaching resources and promotes consistent academic progress.
  4. Daily Limit for Peer Tutoring Appointments: Students may schedule as many Peer Tutoring sessions as they wish, regardless of duration per day or week, as long as the sessions are not consecutive.
  5. Daily Limit for Academic Writing Center Appointments: Students may schedule only one Academic Writing Center appointment per day. This policy helps maximize availability and allows more students to receive assistance each day.

The Learning Commons wants to empower and support you in becoming an independent learner by making sure you understand the concepts necessary to complete your coursework and be successful.

Our student tutors can work with you on your homework during Peer Tutoring and MASS tutoring sessions, but their role is to guide your learning—not to give you answers. They will ask questions, review concepts, use practice problems, and practice strategies with you so that you can complete assignments and prepare for exams independently.

Note: Supplemental Instruction (SI), Supplemental Review Sessions (SRS/MATH 1096), and Content Review (CRL) do not provide homework assistance.

What to Expect

  • Homework help focused on understanding, not just finishing problems.
  • Our tutors do not guarantee correct answers and will not simply “check” your work.
  • MASS tables are group study, so homework coverage may vary.
  • Academic Writing Center provides feedback on writing, but you are responsible for final drafts.

What to Bring

  • Homework or practice problems
  • Textbook
  • Questions you have about the topics you want help with

By helping you understand the concepts in your course, your student tutor is preparing you to complete your homework on your own. If you’re able to complete your homework independently, then you’ll know that you’ll be prepared for your exam.

Students must cancel all pre-scheduled services (Peer Tutoring, Academic Coaching, Success Skills Workshops, and Academic Writing Center appointments) no less than 12 hours in advance. Students who cancel within 12 hours, arrive 10 or more minutes late, or fail to attend will receive a No Show status.

If blocked from pre-scheduled services, students are encouraged to use drop-in services including the MASS Center, Academic Writing Center drop-in appointments, and, if available, Supplemental Instruction.

By scheduling for any Learning Commons service, you acknowledge that you have read and understand the Learning Commons No Show policy.

If the University has declared inclement weather, all Learning Commons programming, except specific UC Clermont services listed below, will be closed during that time. If you have a scheduled a service with the Learning Commons (Academic Coaching, Academic Writing Center, Peer Tutoring, or a Success Skills Workshop), please visit our online scheduling system to reschedule your appointment. You can also call the Learning Commons at (513) 556-3244 when we re-open if you need assistance with scheduling or have questions. If an appointment is canceled due to inclement weather, it will be considered a cancelation, not a no show. Please visit our no show policy for more information on no show appointments.

Specific Clermont services that will continue as scheduled include Group Review Sessions (GRS), held virtually, and writing tutoring appointments with Dr. Don Peteroy that will be changed to virtual appointments.

If there is a shelter in-place warning, all services will be canceled.

For questions about Clifton campus services, call (513) 556-3244 or email LearningCommons@uc.edu. For questions about Clermont campus services, call (513) 558-8319 or email UCCLearningCommons@uc.edu.

The Learning Commons observes our student-staff members to ensure that students are receiving the highest quality support within the Learning Commons. To disrupt your appointment/session as little as possible, the University records selected sessions with Learning Commons Peer Educators. This may include sessions, among others, in the Learning Commons main office, individual tutoring/coaching rooms, the MASS Center, the Academic Writing Center, or Supplemental Instruction/Supplemental Review Session classrooms.

These recordings are made only by the Learning Commons professional staff, program mentors, and student staff to provide for staff evaluations or staff training and any recording will not be reproduced, edited, or viewed by individuals who do not have a direct interest in the performance of the Learning Commons employee being evaluated.

BY PARTICIPATING IN THE LEARNING COMMONS SESSION OR PROGRAM, YOU CONSENT TO BEING RECORDED.  SHOULD YOU NOT CONSENT TO BEING RECORDED, PLEASE NOTIFY THE LEARNING COMMONS STAFF AND YOU WILL NOT BE RECORDED.
