UC's Hoxworth Blood Center in Critical Need of Platelet Donors

Hoxworth Blood Center, University of Cincinnati is in critical need of platelet donors. All eligible donors are encouraged to make an appointment to donate blood at their earliest convenience regardless of blood type. Currently 40 to 50 donors are needed each day to meet needs of patients in our area hospitals.

“We are experiencing an all-time high usage rate combined with a low donor turn out” states Gregg Boothe, Associate Director. “The demand is greater due to a combination of new patient services, programs and treatment regimens that require platelet transfusion support. Our dedicated apheresis donors have helped maintain the community supply, but we are also in need of new apheresis donors to help us meet the increased need that we are currently experiencing, and will continue to experience, in the next few years.”

“One in five Americans suffers from allergies and we are seeing that result in decreased blood donors. Please be advised that you can still make a blood donation even if you are taking over-the-counter or prescription allergy medications” advises Alecia Lipton, Hoxworth spokesperson. “Allergy sufferers can still make a donation as long as they are fever free.”

Walk-ins are always welcome. Appointments can be scheduled by calling (513) 451-0910 or by visiting www.hoxworth.org
