UC Clermont College Instructor Incorporates Volunteerism at Freestore Foodbank into Course

Linsey Koeritz took her College Readiness and Success class out into the community to volunteer at the Freestore Foodbank. They spent time in the classroom discussing urban and rural poverty but it was here where they saw first-hand what it looked like.

“My class seemed to connect with the experience. They gained a new appreciation for poverty by seeing how much food went to various people around the Cincinnati area. Many came away with a better framework and understanding of poverty,” said Koeritz.

“My experience at the Freestore Foodbank really opened my eyes to how many families in Cincinnati are having a hard time putting food on the table…It made me think about how much I really waste and who out there would really be thankful for the box of cereal that I threw away because the box said it was a day past the expiration,” said Rebecca Riley, a student in the class.

There were multiple students who continued to volunteer with the YWCA, James Sauls, and the Freestore Foodbank after the class finished their service learning.

“The Freestore Foodbank was a wonderful organization to work with - they are passionate about the impact they were making in the Cincinnati area. The students seemed happy about the opportunity to work together as a class on a service learning project. They seemed to feel that they were making a difference,” added Koeritz.
