It blends laptops, flat screen TVs, and new computer stations with the traditional rows of books that are so familiar in a library setting. The new UC Blue Ash College Library opened this week with a wide range of options and resources for students.
The new space is the culmination of more than two years of planning and construction. The college moved the library services to a smaller, temporary area on campus last fall while the old space was renovated to provide a bright, colorful and high-tech library that could better serve today’s college students. It has the feel of an upscale café with computer stations featuring large flat screen monitors, high-top tables with stools, and comfortable chairs and couches.
The UC Blue Ash Library covers more than 10,000 square feet and features eight study rooms that are enclosed by glass and include 47-inch TV monitors that can be used for study meetings, creating presentations or viewing educational DVDs. “We are seeing more collaborative studying by students, and these new rooms are perfect for that,” said Heather Maloney, Library Director at UC Blue Ash. “They allow students to work together without disrupting others in the library. Individual students can also reserve the rooms if they want an especially quiet place to study alone.”
Along with new technology and more space designed for group study, the library features an abundance of windows and natural light, something that students consistently said they wanted when surveyed. “The input from our students was invaluable in really helping us understand the resources and layout that would benefit them the most,” said Maloney. “We also talked to our faculty and staff and the architects used that information, along with he latest trends in library design when developing the final plans for the new space.”
The library is part of a major, $4.5 million renovation project in Muntz Hall on the UC Blue Ash campus. The project covers 22,000 square feet and also includes a new café, a student commons and a renovated dean’s suite. It is designed to provide more space for the growing student population; UC Blue Ash now has more than 6,000 students, making it the largest regional college campus in Ohio.
